Guys,
As I peruse this board I keep seeing references to various codes being thrown. Are these codes only shown when hooking up a diagnostic tool at the dealership, or some other way?
I'm having no problems with my truck, other than mileage not up to what I've heard I should get. I'm still stock although considering the Banks deal, but I keep getting scared by the horror stories I keep reading here. Called my dealer about the reflash, but he said unless I'm having specific problems they don't just do it. Only 4000 trouble free miles so far.
Thanks for the patience with a new diesel owner. Tried to search for this answer but no luck.

Yes, they are getting them from a code reader. Some programmers will read them, some use a Tech II, some use another version or brand of scan tool. I use the Diablosport Predator, works great, and around 400 bones.

Some call Onstar and get them to tell them the code, but I don't know how that works.

if your truck is stock and your SES light is not on then you are doing pretty good!
Start doing mods to it and you may trip the light and then need to hook up a diagnostic to it and get the code off of it.

Actually you can get codes without the light. Both Kragen and Autozone have readers in the $100 range that can read the codes. Some of them will clear the codes also.

true you can get codes without tripping the SES light, but you will have to get the code a number of times before it trips it. I had EGR codes in mine, but no SES light. (I did exhaust mods though)

the scantron OBDII reader can read and erase the codes if you like.. I have one, good tool.
