I just purchased a 2002 Chevy 3500 LT dually with LB7 diesel. I read that the Allison tranny was an option for this truck. How can I identify whether or not it has an Allison? The dealer didn't seem to know or care as they just wanted to sell the truck and move on. I had to bring it to a diesel shop to get an inspection sticker and I asked the guy about it and he said that there may be a tag that would indicate that or I could call GM and give them the VIN and they could tell me. Is there a certain code in a certain position within the VIN that I could check? Are there any visual clues as to whether or not it is an Allison tranny? Yes, if you can't tell, I'm a newbie both on this site and with pickup trucks. My son is undertaking a careen in ATV racing so we had to purchase a toy hauler and pickup to haul him around the circuit. Any and all help is appreciated!

Don't bring it there for any service! The Duramax ONLY came with the Allison as noted above. It is only an option with the 8.1 2500/3500 series.

Wasn't there an option for a manual? . . . But yes Allison was the only automatic tranny.

That is great news. I was hoping that was the case. I have heard nothing but good about the Allison tranny. Thanks again for all the replies. Looking forward to fun times with this new truck.
