I don't think it's true but my neighbors know it all son-in-law says poeple are complaining about the Duramax's breaking down because the have so much torque it breaks the input shaft because it's so small. I know it can't be true with all the stuff going on on this website.I said I don't listen to him because he think's he's Mister know it all. He's a Chevy guy but he has an ext cab 2500 Dooodge gasser.

I saw my input shaft compared to a 'normal' sized one at the tranny shop the other day and I'd have to say that's BS...

I know several guys with cranked up dodges that have broken inputs on their manuals but never heard of it on a GM duramax truck...

I figured that, This guy doesn't know his A$$ from a hole in the ground really. I just played along with it. You know the Allison isn't wussy by no means.

Nar, Aren't Dodge trannys known for prone breakage on some things with older models though? The Allison has proven itself for many years and seems to darn well handle alot of beatings it sounds like

I heard the older Dodge auto tranny had lots of problems. The '04 model is supposed to be much better. The only time you have problems with the Allison is when you add a power module and hot rod it a lot. However, the issue is slipping clutches, not breaking input shafts............

If you break an Allison input or output shaft..... you got some mean power there.

GM used to run an add in Trailer Life that had the Ford, Dodge, and Allison input shafts side-by-side. There was no comparison. The Allison was beefy, while the other two were pretty thin.

One of these days, if I come across the add, I'll scan and post.

You know how they have that comparison of the Connecting rods? Well you could do a comparison of the three trannys in the three diesels. Wouldn't be to hard to figure out who would get first would it.:D

Yeh ~ he got crossed wires. He's thinking Dodge. Our son responded to a call where a fella had a hopped up dodge towing >8tons up a hill and his ($1200) custom made/heat treated/beefed up input shaft sheared and found himself rolling backwards. It was his 4 shaft to shear. Heard nothing on the DMax.

I have heard of only one breaking.....

Anybody wanna guess who?

BlueOx03

MT??

BTW, the bigger connecting rod comparision is nothing but marketing. Of course the Cummins has a bigger rod--the Cummins only has six cylinders, and so each piston is bigger and the stroke is longer, which means the rod has to be bigger..........

OK, who's not bragging they put a serious hurt on an Allison input shaft?

I don't remember anyone whining about twisting an input shaft...

That's pretty tough to do unless shock loaded or some God awful amount of torque...

You guys have some good guesses, few clues? Dont post a whole bunch, one of the fore runners of gobs of power. One of the quickest trucks out there now at least in the 1/8th.

That was my next guess...I'm tired of guessing I just started my truck and I should make it to Todd Wenzel buy the time funny guy gets to work and have just enough energy to ring his neck...and do another nasty burnout by the service check in....

I have learned sooooo much from you guys on here it's amazing. Thank's and I should show that guy this proof about how he thinks the input shafts are junk.

Dig up an older (6 months or so) truck magazine. You will find a GM add that shows the differences of the input shafts on the big 3. The allison is by far the biggest. I tried to find it online but couldn't. If I run across one in a magazine I will scan it for you.

Thank's, I can't imagine how much bigger the Allis shaft is than the rest of them.
