If I'm in the wrong forum, please feel free to move it...

I just got some 285's on my truck and need to do a little tunage...

Could someone please assist with standard ball heights for towing. I'm not talking RV trailers here (I have that handled)...I'm talking those small utility trailers, and larger enclosed trailers (like 16 footers).
My 3" drop presently measures 20' to the top of the ball, and I'm considering a 6" drop that would leave me at 17" to the top off the ball.
I also have air bags, so if I'm an inch or so low I could easily raise it a tad.

Amazon has that Alumistinger 6" Drop for 54.99 free ship...;)
I've been looking very hard at that one - rated to 8000 lbs.
Use a convertible 2-2 5/16 ball and I only need one drop.

What I'm really after is the heights I want to hit...I have heard that 18" is supposed to be a standard, and my 3" drop leaves me a couple inches high if that is true. What I have had hooked up even before the tire change was too high, and the new tires brought me up only 1/2", but it still needs to be dialed in.

2004 and later trailers should have a placard stating the correct ball height. The three trailers I have with 14" tires say 18". The two with 13" tires say 17". The snowmobile trailer I have, which has 10" wheels says 18"...I think it's a more weight forward design. If I don't know, or can't find a placard, I go with 18". Trailer needs to be level when loaded.

Its usually 18" on that trailer.

My entire fleet of trucks and trailers, with 2 & 5/16" balls, have a height of 20 inches to the top of the ball.

A few of my smaller trailers could run as low as 18 inches, but 20 inches set them just right loaded correctly.

Now we're getting somewhere...thanks guys. I do appreciate it.
I have hooked up a couple trailers with mine and it does look a little high yet.
I know it all depends on what trailer you hook up. Little guys with little wheels need to be lower by a ways, and larger enclosed trailers are probably closer to a standard. Most of my stuff needs to ride near level, so it sounds like I need to keep my 3" drop and pick up another that will go a bit farther.

A 6" drop will have me around 17, and the air bags can easily bring me up if I'm a little low.
