: nv4500 bulletproof? look what came out of my transmission (pics)
imdawrlus 01-09-2008, 05:08 PM i planned on changing the transmission fluid today in my truck for the first time since i've owned it only for preventative maintenance and because its a little stiff to get into the gears, not just one but all the gears. it might be normal but i'm not sure.
anyways, i drained the oil which didnt look terrible, then i stuck my finger in the drain hole and found tons of metal scraps, not filings but actual parts.
what you see in the pictures is only what i could get to with my finger, i'm sure its not even half of whats in there. should i pull off that little cover and clean it out real good? i havent filled it up with the new oil yet.
so what do you guys think?

High Sierra 2500 01-09-2008, 06:04 PM Yep, looks like one of the bearings fell apart. I guess I'd tear it apart and see what happened... :(
BlueBurby1 01-09-2008, 10:02 PM ouch!!...thats not good;...last time i saw metal like that in my motor/transfer/tranny...death of an era(lucky it was an import)
revx1000 01-09-2008, 10:29 PM Yea thats the thrust brg between the imput shaft and the main shaft . I change my 91 4x4 from a 4 speed to the 5 speed last may. I put brgs and seals in it before i installed and that brg go's between the two shafts. She will have lots of end play in it now hows the shifting into 3rd? the brg and sycro. kits are not too bad of price from the jobbers . The sooner you o'haul the cheeper it will be . Good luck.
High Sierra 2500 01-09-2008, 11:21 PM Definitely better to take it apart now before it grinds something else up. ;)
imdawrlus 01-10-2008, 01:30 AM the transmission shifts fine just a little stiff...the only thing i've noticed now that i think about it is that every now and then i'll hear a little bit of a buzzing sound coming from the transmission area, and the other day it was making a really funny sound when i would take my foot off the clutch when i was downshifting (winding up noise) but that stopped.
the trucks been an endless money pit...since it shifts fine and i didnt even know there was a problem until i checked the bottom of the pan, how much time do you guys think i have until it lets go completely?
4doorTAHOE6.5TD 01-10-2008, 01:50 AM Beyond ZERO time left,it's already coming apart,now !!!
BlueBurby1 01-10-2008, 07:45 AM overhaul now....anytime you shred something like that...its done...
High Sierra 2500 01-10-2008, 11:31 AM Yeah, it needs work. Running it like that will just cost you more money. Hate to say it...
BlueBurby1 01-11-2008, 07:59 AM makes me want to take off the oil pan and double check my engine.....or maybe not

i had no idea anything was wrong with it, i was just changing the fluid. might not be a bad idea.
since i've been thinking about getting rid of it, i think now might be the time to before it blows.

Technically, it already did...
imdawrlus 01-11-2008, 05:41 PM ....blows completly

BlueBurby1 01-14-2008, 06:44 PM is the engine runningm, cause i'd love one to swap into my new jeep
imdawrlus 01-15-2008, 04:56 PM alright so i'm gonna take a shot at fixing this. i've got a buddy that knows quite a bit and he said if i can get the trans up to his place he'd go through it and help me replace that bearing. once the trans is out is it hard to get to the thurst bearing? does anyone have any advice about supporting the engine when i get the transmission out? is it a pain to get the thing out? thanks
BlueBurby1 01-15-2008, 09:01 PM engine will support itself on it's mounts...ahh the beauty of a 6.2....if you really want to, 2X4 and a floor jack
revx1000 01-15-2008, 09:13 PM What have you got a 4/4 or 2wheel drive What year?
When you go to o'haul it pick up a brg and sycro kit . You may need some shims for the main shaft end play so check out the price of a snap ring and shim kit. When you go to take the rear extension housing off you will need to heat the main case where the bolts are (6 of them) . Because they use red lockite on them . There are a 10mm 12 point and you will round off the heads before you get them to come loose . Also when you pick up the brg. kit make sure you get for a gm not a dodge same kit except the imput brg. and seal are larger dia. for the dodge . Also when you go to remove the brg cup from the front brg. retainer the best way to do this is to lay a small bead of weld around the middle of the cup and then it will fall right out of the retainer . There are needle brgs on the main sahft that the gears ride on very good idea to replace them your frt and rear main brgs. are tappered so when setting the end play with new bgrs. set to 0 end play that way as the brgs. "run in" you will not have excess end play . Check your shift forks for wear ie the 3-4 fork look close at the ends that ride in the syncro. collar , you can get them new at around $100.00 . good luck
