This seems like a pretty nice place. I've looked around a bunch and there's tons of great information here.

I thought I'd make my first post one that's sure to be a typical Newbie question:

What does it mean when somebody says they "limped" their transmission?

Welcome Bruce. Relax and enjoy. Post whatever... you know I do.

The limp mode is a protection feature. The computers watch the rpms of the clutch packs and torque convertor. When you overload the trans with too much power, clutches begin to slip. The computer knows.... and it slams the Allison into limp mode to protect it. I think limp is only third gear.... no reverse.

Turn the truck off. Wait a few... restart. Limp mode goes away.

Put In A Large Hp Programmer And Hammer It Into 5th Gear, You Will Definitley Know What Limp Is. Done It More Than Once, Before The Ats Was Installed.

Limp means limp home mode. Computer sees something that pisses it off and it basically shuts down and reverts to a program that reads no input from anything and makes things work by way of a program with its own values.( means you need to go see a tech, usually has a check engine light on). When this happens to an automatic trans, the TCM shuts off all power (no 12Vs to system) and depending on which vehichle you have; that means you are stuck in second or third gear forward. There is always one gear, usually second or third which has all shift solenoids off. That is the forward gear you will be stuck in. Now, the Allison is not like this; it normaly will drop to the next lowest gear that didn't slip when it defaults (limp), but not always. It may lose reverse, it may stop all forward motion, it may clunkwhen put it in gear and it may have a severe downshift feel. We really don't know what the Allison will do all the time when it sees something it doesn't like. Hope this helps a little.
