: How much oil?
Pruittx2 01-08-2008, 11:15 PM If your burning used motor oil or trans fluid, in your fuel tank,,,, How much would you use in your 37 gallon tank?
I thought I had seen no more than 10%,, But I would think puting in 3+ gallons of uesd oil would be way to much,,, I have done a quart or more a few times,,, but I got like 4 gals of the stuff just sitting there. So if I can run it thru the tank and not hurt anything, then thats where its going!

<Mutters> Stinkin fuel at 3.34 a gal,:mad::mad::mad: Please check out the Lubricity Additive Study and read carefully, then check item # 13: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728
13)Used Motor Oil, Shell Rotella T 15w40, 5,000 miles used.
Unconventional (Not ULSD compliant, may damage systems)
HFRR 634, 2 micron improvement
200:1 ratio
16.64 oz / 26gal tank
price: market value
chevylover 01-09-2008, 08:51 AM Still people there which don't want to belive, that motor oil, especially USED, atf and so on IS NOT MADE FOR BURNING. If you want to lubricate the pump and the injectors, buy an additive (like Stanadyne, 911, etc.) or use 2-stroke-oil ! This oil is especially mad for burning !
Use about 1 quart per 26 gal. tank or about 1,5 quarts per 34 gal. tank

Sven

Don't bitch. Mine is $4.01 a gal, and I can see an oil well from my deck.
As for burning used oil, how much do you suppose it would cost you to put in a new IP, maybe injectors, r/r tank, sock, lines...
Like Sven said, motor oil isn't made for burning. USED motor oil really isn't good stuff. Some of the problem is the grit and crap, some is the additives, some is the chemistry of partly-degraded oil. It really isn't gonna be good for things, and I doubt you'll save that much on it, anyway.
If you're that stressed about fuel costs, start gathering up veggie oil from McDonalds and making your own bio. Personally, as choked as I am about the fuel costs, I can't be bothered. In the long run, this is the price I pay for driving a truck rather than a ricer.
yowmemperor 01-09-2008, 11:05 AM be careful about the veggie from mcdonalds. trans fat oils and/or hydrogenated oils are bad for pre-filters (glog them and its a waste) and its horrible on fuel pumps and injectors. the more pure the oil the better it is - filter 2 microns or smaller if posssible, never go over 8 microns. rule of thumb about the oil, the worse it is for your health the worse it is for your engine. i know around here i you purchase several thousand gallons of prefiltered used oil from a collection company, you can get it for about $1.80 a gallon. this eliminates any collection headache.

Cu,
Sven 2-Cycle Oil came in slightly better than Stanadyne Lubricity Formula in the study (Stanadyne was 8th): 7)Super Tech Outboard 2-cycle TC-W3 engine oil

HFRR 474, 162 micron improvement

Where in the world are you living? I'm in the northern part of the east coast and its anywhere from $3.65 to $3.75. Jifaire I don't feel the pain of $4.01 (yet) but i know the feeling of $3.75. i still don't know why diesel is so damn expensive. Isn't it easier and cheaper to make than gasoline?
Dan Hunter 01-09-2008, 07:17 PM Jifaire gets charged extra because of what the bear does to the Men's Room.

It's all supply and Demand. Up here winter means alot more trucking and rig moving which cannot be done in the summer. One local Flying J goes through an average of something like 16 b-train tankers a day!
IamDave0887 01-09-2008, 07:39 PM make's sense. eventually it'll get to be that price where i live as well. your right about supply and demand. i demand that they supply diesel fuel that doesn't cost a first born child seeing that i dont have children i guess i'm not going anywheres. :p:
jifaire 01-09-2008, 09:56 PM Supply and Demand my arse.
A barrel of Oil makes quite a bit more Diesel than gasoline, and takes less energy to do so.
A gallon of diesel requires less energy in terms of finish refining than a gallon of gasoline.
A gallon of Diesel has fewer additives than a gallon of gasoline.
Ergo, Diesel costs about 60-65% as much to make as gasoline, per volume.
Now - the demand for gasoline is higher than the demand for diesel. However, the refining companies configure refineries to produce 'shades' of diesel such as JP, fuel oil, diesel, etc. and they can manipulate this practice to manage production capacity.
Remember when Katrina hit? They suddenly had a shortage of diesel fuel. Lots of fuel oil and JP, but shortage of diesel. Sorry. Nothing we can do. Once the refineries were up and running, they suddenly have a shortage of fuel oil, so home heating goes up. Did you notice that diesel didn't go back down?
Oil feeds my family and pays my taxes, but you know, enough is enough. When Exxon makes record profits over and over, when government answers to big oil before it answers to the people, when food costs go sky-high because truckers have to pass those fuel costs on, then I call BS.
Supply and demand, my arse. Try that one on somebody that hasn't been in the industry. That's about as silly as blaming it aall on unrest in teh middle-east. You guys get more oil from Canada than you do from Iraq.
Mercedesnick 01-09-2008, 10:44 PM jifaire,
Do what I do; buy oil company stocks. At least you know when prices go up, you are making some of it back.
Nick

I love it. Thanks, Nick... can't go through every day cranky!
