Dad and I got into it today. Heres the story
I bought my 01 D/A combo a little over a month ago...after a month of stock exhaust I decided to replace the muffler with 3.5" pipe. I figured since its my truck and I paid for it I will do with what I want...right? Anyway he gave me a big spill about how it'll cause my engine to blow because it doesn't have enough back pressure. I always thought the less back pressure the better for a diesel right? But thats not the best part! He also proceded to tell me that by cutting off the muffler it will in turn affect my computer, by having it to lean on fuel mixture...sounds like hes talking about a gas rig??? But thats not why Im here...I need it in writting to show him the benifits of straight exhaust. I tried to tell him it will lower my egt, help my turbo spool up quicker...but yall know how dads are...they just dont listen. Then he told me it sounded like c*ap...almost like it has a miss...he wondered if i would make it out the driveway, cause he thought it was missing so bad. Thanks guys I just need to convince him. Also my trucks not missing...it sounds like any direct injection diesel does...I think anyway...

I run the 5" straight, no cat , no muffler. I have for over 5000 miles now. No bad side effect. I do however, feel like theres a little more hp, turbo DEFFINTITELY spools up much faster, egt are lower by a bunch, and I sound awsome. Sorry pop. But, yours sounds like a walk in the park compared to mine.

In most diesel applications, the turbo gives plenty of back pressure.

No need for a muffler at all.

Sounds like you can't convince him no matter what you put in front of him. If my kid cut his muffler off and made some noise pollution ride, I would have the same reaction. I would quit trying to convince him and convince yourself. My 10 cents

Just wink at your Dad & tell him that it's worth it because you like it that way. Hopefully, he'll understand.

My Dad died when I was pretty young, & I wish he was still around to argue with. I'm sure there were plenty of times that he shook his head at some of the things I did, even if it didn't really hurt anything. ):h

My dad was the same way when I started doing things like that to my truck as well. I simply stated to him that he raised me to take care of my equipment, and if he thinks that I'd be doing this stuff to my $60,000 truck without doing research first, then he needs to re-evaluate the way he raised me.

I got a short questioning look, which then turned to a smile and has since never said a word about anything.

Don't know if your dad is right or wrong. I'm 76 now and recall a llot of similar arugements with the old man. He's been gone a few years now and now I hear the same crap from my son in laws and grandsons that I gave my dad. Wish now there had been a few sit down learning talks for both of us but its to late now.

Tell your dad to think about all the over the road tractors he has seen without mufflers, or straight piped farm tractors, then he will probably think otherwise.;)

"Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you."

Also, straight piping your muffler on a stock exhaust will give little if any performance and I doubt there will be much change in EGT's. In my opinion, it's not worth causing trouble between you and your dad. Save your money for a 4 or 5 inch exhaust system and then show your father the research on these products and let him warm up to it. Then maybe he will help you and it may provide an opportunity for your dad to be a part of your life as well as you in his.

My dad was the same way until he saw what a straight pipe did to my truck. Now he has a straight pipe on his truck and a couple tractors too.

as long as your paying for your truck just do it when he aint looken its easer to ask for forgiveness than to fight about it he will probably never know me and my parents didnt all ways see eye to eye on the things i did and did with my trucks but i paid for them and my mistakes not that you would be making one

I always say it gives me better gas mileage and walk away. and by the way it's not always true cuz i would duel exhaust on my old f**d 5.0l truck and it took away like 3mpg. But it's still a good excuse. just my .02. P.s. 4 inch turbo back and intake on the way. Haven't had to explain myself yet on my d-max.

40,000 miles on my 03 with no problems. Cooler temps guarenteed, awesome turbo responsiveness and love that barrel chested sewer pipe sound. Besides if DMaxAllitech says it's good to go... IT'S good to go!!! My old man listens to everybody except me and my brother.

Thanks for yall's input, and I know how dads can be sometimes...heck, I'll probably be that way...I finally got him convenced to let me leave it, but I still have to hear about how he still doenst think its right...all this coming from a man that ran a straight pipe on a 3020 JD pulling a 4 btm. plow in southwest missoura...and also encouraging me to replace the muffler on my 4010 JD, with a 3.5" chrome pipe...Go figure's all I can say):h . Again thanks guys...sshaffer...looks like we got more in common then the trucks we drive;)
