I have a friend with a 2000 F350 4x4 4 door lonbed 7.3 auto. He recently bought it used with about 100k on it. When climbing hills and downshifting there is alot of noise coming from the engine exaust. It sounds like it comes from right behind the dashboard on the drivers side. Approx. where the steering column goes through.

The noise is a whowhowhowho type of noise. IT kind of whistles kinda woofs kinda pops. It happens more under acceleration and sevverly when towing a 6klbs load over vail pass.

Is this normal? Is there something broke?

Sounds to me like a wastegate blowing off a little steam or a turbo barking for mercy? I am not very familar with Fords. So any help would be appreciated.

You gave me a starting point. I did a search and found bunches of info on 7.3 turbo surge. It sounds like it is mainly cause by performance mods. ( air/fuel). To fix it you need a wicked wheel ( 70.00) or better yet the ATS turbo housing, although quite a bit more money. ( 450.00)

Thanks.
