I am looking for a 5" exhaust for the new truck, and am going between a MBRP system and a Magnaflow system. Also am debating between a cat-back set up or a turbo-back. I am wondering which one between the two set ups is going to offer more HP/TQ. I am guessing that the turbo-back would have the better numbers, but are they that much better for the price compaired to what I would get with the cat-back set up.

Any feedback would be great. I would like to hear from the guys that have one of them or even any other brand. I guess

The sound is what's the diffrence. My MBRP Cat-Back is just a bit louder over stock, when I get on it, it has a nice rumble..I like it. The turbo backs are louder..

I believe one of the Diesel mag's did a performance test between cat-back and turbo-back. The Cat-Back showed more power through the mid-rpm range IIRC..

All depends on what type of sound you like. I have some sound clips posted in a link in my garage. Take a look...

ANYONE ELSE HAVE INPUT? I just bought the Magnaflow 5" cat back, but the cat and pipes before it might fall off if I hear a convincing arguement. THANKS.

EGT is way lower without the cat and best of all the turbo whistle is nice, and when u step on it the truck sounds like a jet!

Well if you went with a 5" and you are not taking the 3.5" front section off you will see virtually no difference in performance. Diesels are all about flow, with that being said you would be much further ahead to remove the front secton and install a 4" turbo back system and the price would be about the same as what you have gone with now. 5" tubing is god only for EXTREME flow. to see the benefit of 5" over 4" you would have to ad some serious flow and most likely a turbo.

u are right about the 5 inch for extreme flow, the reason why I changed to a 5 inch turbo back was becuz of the look and sound over the 4 inch i had.

I wont argue the sound is completely different. I was just explaining that the bang for your buck performance wise, would be a 4" turbo back unless running BIG POWER

If you like a loud diesel sound go with the turboback. My first truck had a catback on it and you could barely hear the thing:(. But this time I did it right and put a turboback on....Man is it ever loud:D

I do not want it real loud, sometimes I plow snow well after midnight...don't want to piss off my neighbors or anyone else for that matter. When I was 18 I ran a 305 blazer with 2 1/2 inch duals off the manifolds, no muffs, no cat. I got stopped and got hassled at inspection time. I grew up a lot since, the gains for me to run illegal on a daily driver just don't make sense...then again, not much I do now makes sense, like spending 46K on a truck I don't need, then messing with it. Guess I'm trying to hold on to half my good sense, holding on by my fingernails of course...

I still have my cat and I run a 500 HP tune. I don't think It will hurt performance until you start putting out massive HP. I wish I had time to do a test at the track and see if there is any power loss with a cat. My truck runs about 102-103 in the 1/4 thats about what other trucks are running with the same settup minus the cat.

I went through this same process. I decided on the 5in Magnaflow catback. Installed it and was impressed with the finish and quality of the system, everthing lined up and fit where it should. As far as sound it is slightly louder than stock when I get into it but at idle I couldn't really tell a difference other than the 6in tip sticking out. Now tonight I installed the MBRP front pipe and got rid of the stock one with the cat. I am so glad I went ahead and did it. It is slightly louder at idle but when i really get into it it sounds AWESOME! I say just go turboback from the start you won't be dissapointed. The turbo whistle sound is the best. Unless of course you want to do what I did so you can throw the front pipe back on for emissions and E check when the time comes.
