I have an 02 Duramax and position one on my air conditioner fan does not work and when I turn it to position 5 it rattles real bad. I assume I need to replace the motor and want to know where it is and how hard is it to change out myself?

I'm pretty sure it's under the glove box area. I've changed one out on a 2000 silverado, not hard, maybe a 10 minute deal.

If any position is out, the blower resistor has most likely gone bad. Search "blower resistor". As for the noise, it is possible to have a leaf trapped in there. Also, your truck has a cabin air filter. Might as well change it while you're in there.
I'd definitely examine the resistor for damage and test the motor before changing it. IIRC, the motor was pricey.

I think it is behind the dash but when I went to try and look it was impossible to get to it. Do you have to pull the entire dash board out?

It's behind the glove box. If you have an upper trim level, there is a sound deadening panel to be removed first. Four 7mm headed screws, including one above the tranny hump, need to be removed. The glove box has 3 or 4 screws at the bottom hinge and it will come out. The blower cage is toward the front of the truck and the mounting flange is vertical.

thank you for posting the proper search words.
Mine is doing the same, did a search with just "heater" brought up a thread with you suggesting "blower resistor" found everything I needed to know.
Amaizing what one can do with that little button called search:D
