The Stock GM paper air filter -
- It holds the most crud (by far).
- it filters better providing cleaner air.
- It flows better than other filters when dirty.
- there is no loss in horsepower when compered to other filters.
There was a comparative study done here a few months ago. Do a search and you'll find it.
I do have the results stored locally... if you cannot find them, I'm pretty sure I can forward them to you (yup - just found it a gain).
Note:
The "no loss in horsepower" claim was not mentioned in the filter study; rather it is supported by those who have raced their trucks both with & without the stock paper air filter and noticed no difference in performance.

The stock box is voted the best for being an air cleaner.
The AFE Stage 2 is the best for turbo whistle.
There is no real advantage to changing the air box since the turbo is not starved for air at max designed air flow. Remember the turbo pressurizes the intake.
Unlike an naturally aspirated engine, there is no benefit to the aftermarket air intakes. GM did a pretty good job on this air box.
