: Ticking under dash
Fugitt 01-02-2005, 12:08 AM I recently installed Banks Six Gun and ever since there has been a ticking noise coming from under the dash whenever the vehicle is under load. The ticking noise isn't constant and there is no pattern to it. I have tried disconnecting the Banks six gun and the ticking still is there. Prior to installing the Banks Six Gun I didn't have this problem.
Any suggestions?
Max Power 01-02-2005, 12:13 AM Perhaps its an exhaust leak from the pyrometer install? Exhaust leaks quite often are described as a ticking sound.
patrick 01-02-2005, 12:43 AM A guess? do you have 4x4 shift lever on the floor?
Fugitt 01-02-2005, 12:47 AM My 4x4 is on the left side of the dash.
04Chevy2500HD 01-02-2005, 04:28 PM I have a ticking noise on mine that I think I have narrowed down to the speedo. Mine only occurs in forward motion.
Are you maybe hearing the ticking coming from the motor that is common in the first 20,000 Miles? Is it louder on the outside of the truck? Mine had this tick also but it went away.
Fugitt 01-02-2005, 09:56 PM I have about 25,000 miles on my truck and is only heard in forward motion. It sounds like it is coming from under the dash and the ticking just started.
Heathen 01-02-2005, 10:14 PM You might be hearing more engine noise.Maybe where you cut the grommit in the firewall to run the 6 gun wires?
jholly 01-02-2005, 11:04 PM it's probably your clock. Probably needs oiling.

dmaxalliTech 01-02-2005, 11:09 PM depending on the care used or not used when routing through the firewall, you could open up a passageway for sounds/fumes to travel into the cab
Max Payne 01-03-2005, 09:39 AM Yes, even the smallest leak at a firewall grommet will drive you nuts.
XR-Freak 01-03-2005, 12:43 PM Mine makes a ticking noise that is definately coming from the engine compartment. Sounds like a bad plug wire arching out on a gas engine.
DuramaxEric 01-03-2005, 02:43 PM I have a ticking.. only at high speeds... it almost sounds like it is in the heating duct, like a cover is loose and banging around. It is very occasional.
Oilbrnr 01-03-2005, 04:08 PM Me too. Just as XR-Freak stated. I thought it might be load rated, but that isn't always consistant either.
Fugitt 01-04-2005, 12:08 AM Theat is exactly how my ticking sounds. Has your truck always had the ticking sound?
Lennox69 01-04-2005, 12:10 AM duramaxeric...i had a similiar problem like your on my 2004 and it was a black plastic that covers the hood hinge and it flaps against the hinge to stop this is to place a stip of velcro on the bottom of it..hope it works like mine did...it sound like something is flapping in your passinger windshield side close to the dash...
Lennox69 01-04-2005, 12:12 AM oh by the way mine started doing it worse when i installed a bug deflector..
DuramaxEric 01-04-2005, 07:43 AM thanks Lennox... I will give it a shot:)
Fugitt 05-17-2005, 11:04 PM I finally found the source of the clicking. Every time the AC compressor comes on it made a click that can be heard in the cab when I’m going down the road. Took it to the dealer and said that it is normal to be that loud. Yeah right! :banghead: Anyone else run into this problem?
XR-Freak 05-17-2005, 11:08 PM The AC does tick but the ticking that we are refering to is different. It is a constant ticking noise. I read in the forum some time ago what the noise actually was. Problem is, I forgot what it was. The info came from one of the moderators and they said it was normal, so I just left it at that. don't worry about it. If it was a pressing issue you would hear more about it on this site
Fis Teck 05-18-2005, 02:56 AM That moderator is it an motor that controls one of the ac or heater doors?

Some of the above vehicles may exhibit a random ticking noise that is most audible on an engine with a coolant temperature of 70°C (158°F) or higher and from idle to approximately 1500 RPM. The noise usually is most noticeable at the rear of the driver's side front wheel well. Customers may also comment about hearing a tick noise inside the vehicle at idle such as when sitting at a drive through window. All 6600 Duramax(TM) diesel engines have this condition; however, some are more audible than others. Engine build variation from engine to engine contributes to differences in perceived volume. All Duramax(TM) engines are manufactured to very close tolerances to meet the durability and reliability standards.
This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.:duh: :duh:
This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when, in fact, it was masked by other noises in the past.
Many manufacturers such as Isuzu, Hino, Mitsubishi, and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.
Thanks Max Power, I copied this from another thread after a quick search
