Hi all. So, apparently the alli is good for around 90hp/200lbft without extensive trans mods. How does that rate against the other big two with the trans they offer in their diesels? Can they hold more/less without modification? A friend of mine stated that the fords could hold tripple that (90/200) power output while remaining stock, but I wasn't buying it. Thanks.

I'm not sure that the Torqshift isn't having it's share of problems. Here's a copy of a TSB I saw posted at the RV.net forums....

SUBJECT: Customer Satisfaction Program 04B24:
Certain 2004 Model Year F-250/350/450/550 Super Duty, Econoline, and Excursion Vehicles Equipped with a 5R110 TorqShift Transmission
Transmission Reverse Planet Replacement

PROGRAM TERMS

This program will be in effect until September 30, 2005 regardless of mileage. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 2004 Model Year F-250/350/450/550 Super Duty, Econoline, and Excursion vehicles equipped with a 5R110 TorqShift transmission built from March 8, 2004 through June 24, 2004. Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS....

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

Some 2004 MY Excursion, Super Duty and Econoline vehicles equipped with a 5R110 TorqShift transmission may have low/reverse gear set pinion shaft(s) that may walk out, causing metallic particle contamination. If this condition were to occur, it may lead to harsh/slipping shifts and/or harsh/delayed forward/reverse engagements. If these symptoms are ignored, this could eventually lead to a transmission failure.

SERVICE ACTION

At no charge to the vehicle owner, dealers are to replace the reverse planet assembly on all of the affected vehicles. Note: If vehicles are repaired in a timely manner, secondary transmission damage can be avoided.

REPAIR OF IN-STOCK VEHICLES

Dealers should service in-stock vehicles first because these vehicles will not have secondary damage, and will not require additional repairs beyond the reverse planet replacement.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE

To ensure the needed supply of parts are available for dealers , owners of affected vehicles will not be notified by mail until the beginning of January, 2005. Please note that dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter. In addition, dealers should repair in-stock units before sale to minimize future customer inconvenience.

Thanks bluenote. Good info. Any one else want to chime in on the performance side of the different transmissions?

They have to spend money on them just like us.

A local diesel shop owner told me that the other brands start having trouble holding the extra ponies at about the 100hp level also.

They will all lose the converter clutch eventually under any kind of horsepower sooner or later. When the stock converter clutch starts slipping it greatly weakens the transmissions ability to handle torque and the trans clutches will go next.

Oh by the way CCAT you are probably taking to people who sit behind a desk ,that does not know DIESELS.Allison has been around longer than ford and dodge in dealing with diesels.

Ford makes its own, Chrysler makes it's own and GM uses Allison which is wholly GM since 1920.

If Ford and Allisons are the better of the three. I pick the Allison. The torqshift (Ford) shifts better but I don't trust Ford.

Actually GM powertrain just took over the reins at Allison about 4 years ago. A year or two after the LCT launch. They were actually about to "CAN" Allison to ZF about 10 years ago, but the govt stepped in and stopped that because Allison makes the M1 Abrahams ?sp? tank in plant 14 in Indy. Can't have the Germans owning a company that makes our tank tranny's now could we?

But yes GM has had controlling interest in Allison for quite some time. FYI Allison was GM's largest generator of revenue last year across the board. Which is really something, because GM has it's hands in all kinds of things.
