: Possible trick for better MPG......
mannytranny 01-01-2005, 11:32 PM I dont know about you all, but I have noticed a definite improvement in mileage once I get that winter cover on. Dont laugh at the Kaleefornicateur, but I know that I get at least 1 mpg better running that winter cover into the 50's or so. (Not towing, of course)
Anyone else do this?
I know with the VW TDI, it uses roughly double the amount of fuel until its at full operating temp. Just seems like the 15 miles it takes the Duramax to warm up when its 40* can be helped by a winter cover!

blueyacht 01-02-2005, 12:42 AM My truck's mileage goes down in cold weather for sure. (-30c here today )From about 20mpg in summer to 15 mpg in winter. The winter front helps but the truck still won't get to operating temp in this type of weather.
Idle_Chatter 01-02-2005, 08:52 AM Not only does the Winter Cover warm her up, which it obviously likes, but I've found that there's a noticable aerodynamic benefit from "slicking over" the huge grille, worth at least 1 to 1.5 mpg increase on the highway.
Minn-Kota 01-02-2005, 10:22 AM ......and a 50° increase on the Allison.

mannytranny: i have seen the exact same results as you have, and 1 could be on the low side, also nice to see the tranny warmer as well, now i wish we could relocate the outside temperture probe, or has that been done yet(have not looked)):h
I put my grill cover on a couple weeks ago and could swear the fuel gage was going down more slowly. I figured it was my imagination, or wishfull thinking. It'll be interesting to calculate the milage at the next fill-up.
blueyacht 01-02-2005, 01:57 PM Fredw, I relocated my temp probe down to where the tow hook hole is. It works great. When idling it is off a few degrees but when moving is accurate. If you needed a tow you would have to be carefull.

will look at that, where is it now located at:)
blueyacht 01-02-2005, 03:03 PM Look behind the grill close to the rad you will see a black plastic gizmo like a small funnel. Won't work at all with winter front. I tried moving it behind lights but that didn't work as good as by towhook. I think sooner or later the road crap might wreck mine though.

mannytranny 01-02-2005, 03:25 PM Ya, I dont know how it will work with the Allison. Maybe a good idear to keep an eye on the tranny gauge.
The basic goal is to get the engine up to running temp and to keep it there as best we can.
It takes 10-15 miles unloaded to warm up at 45* or so. It must be impossible to warm up when it acually is cold.
Anyone used the lower cover? I havent used the bumper cover yet.
_nar_ 01-02-2005, 06:51 PM On my lly with the winter cover on my temp gauge is accurate until the truck sits a while running then it gets a couple degrees warmer than outside. When moving though it's right on with the thermometers I see around town like banks and stuff... Wonder if it is in a different location on the newer trucks?
LanduytG 01-02-2005, 08:48 PM Yes you will get better economy because things are up to temp. I put mine on a couple weeks ago and it was down to -5*. This week it has warmed up to 55-60* and I still have it on. Yes when it gets this warm the trans does go to 160* but thats no big deal. Of course you could never tow with it on when its this warm. I had a winter front on my 95 made when the truck was new, this was before everyone had them for sale. On that truck mpg jumped a good .5 mpg.

Winter cover???? Oh yeah, we just had our two days of freezing weather for this year, and I missed the opportunity to put on the winter cover. back in the 70s today on the Texas Gulf coast. L8R

I use the bumper cover. Every little bit helps. I would like to find some stainless inserts for the two big bumper holes though. It is pretty cold here so I use the winter fronts from Oct to April. Take them off when it stays above 50*
Ace_of_Chaos 01-02-2005, 09:34 PM Winter Cover ?? In the time it would take me to figure out how to put one on, we've gone from 12" of snow to over 73deg !
