: Fuel Filter Changeout
Bushwacke 01-01-2005, 07:36 PM Have never changed my fuel filer on my 04 Duramax. Now have 30,000 and wanting to change it. After the dealership told me they wanted $80 to replace I decided to go to the local parts store and buy one for $26 and change myself. Only concern is I have never changed one and can not find anything on changing in my owners manual. Any tips or suggestions for getting this done the right way????
Thanks
wldtrkyhntr1 01-01-2005, 07:43 PM BushWacke I just went and looked in my manual and it is on page 5-11. and 5-12. It has been a month or so but are the directions also in the box the filter came in?
NCMIC 01-01-2005, 07:53 PM Look for the maintenance manual in, that has the maintenance schedule, your truck. You should have gotten one when you purchased your truck. You are lucky to have gotten that far without any problems.
One thing you may consider is taking off the spash gusrd on the passenger side for easier access. Be sure to prime the other filter before firing the truck. Once the truck is running, check for leaks. Shut it off and check for leaks again.
This info is just and fyi as you are a first timer to changing your fuel filter.

My friend, you want to wander around in the do-it-yourself section. You will find a bang-up write up on changing the fuel filter. Also a real nice write up on the maintenance schedules. Ah, 30k miles is about twice what GM recommends.

Bushwacke 01-01-2005, 08:24 PM Thanks for the quick replys. I found the instructions in the manual. Will change first thing in the morning.
Thanks again
TheBac 01-01-2005, 08:36 PM 30K is about 3 times the mileage that most GM techs on this board recommend....ouch!

AYR TIME 01-01-2005, 09:40 PM Bushwacke,
As jholly has indicated, complete, and very clear easy to follow fuel filter changing instructions and photos thanks to "dmaxalliTech" (Eric) are on this forum under "Do It Yourself and Other Useful Articles".

As other have stated, you might seriously consider a much shorter run time on these filters..like 10k miles or 16k kms.
Hope this helps
Richard

Just did my first one today. Removed the passenger side battery for better access the first time. Almost lost the bleeder screw when I loosened it up too much. That would have been a disaster on New Years Day! Also couldn't get the filter off with a rubber strap type wrench. Had to go to Auto Zone to buy the right filter wrench.
Bushwacke 01-02-2005, 01:44 PM Got it changed this morning without a hitch. Thanks for all the replys as well as the informative link to the post with the pictures and instructions. Will change the next one in 10,000.

Blue Max 01-02-2005, 03:20 PM At 30K you have destroyed your truck. Put it in a box and send it to me and go get yourself another one before its to late. LOL

:D Never mind boxing it, just send me the keys and I'll pick it up! LOL.
marcdeluca 01-03-2005, 10:45 AM I changed my filter for the first time last week. My oil filter wrench wasn't big enough, so I took a big screwdriver and made an indentation on the filter near the mount, then beat on it at an angle to loosen it up. I had already drained it. After I took it off, I cut it apart to inspect. It looked pretty good, so far I must not have picked up any dirty fuel. I put the new double pleat filter on it.

Diesel filter wrench at Auto-Zone is less than $5.........probably alot less than the hammer you were using
):h
TheBac 01-03-2005, 11:25 AM Don't forget to get the filter wrench with the swivel handle for the fuel filters. :D
I now have 3 differnet size strap filter wrenches in my tool box because of the DMax....didn't cost all that much, and I have all my bases covered. ):h
Talk of hammers and screwdrivers makes me a bit nauseous....
