: Overhead mount differences
Trippin 01-01-2005, 03:51 PM Guys,
I have had a few questions regarding my "Overhead Mounts" vs the others and why the price is so different. I feel that this is a legitimate question and thought I would address it here for all. See the attached photos.
Mine is on top.:D
Max Power 01-01-2005, 04:10 PM Trippin, your guage mount is definitely worth the money. A couple things I noticed.
The viewing angle is WAY better then the others. This alone makes it worth the extra money.
There is a lot more material in your mount then the others. This obviously adds to the cost.
One of the biggest thing I noticed is how perfectly your mount fits. The other mounts require a HUGE fight to get them in. You also end up damaging or trimming the plastic a bit to get them in which makes it not as nice if you go back to stock. Your mount slides right in like it should! Excellent job!
Your mount is finished off with clear coat. This provides the cleanest look and protection.
You went the extra mile which makes for a perfect product. I couldn't have done better if I did it myself. :D
As they say, "You get what you pay for"
On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a solid 10.
Mike L. 01-01-2005, 04:16 PM Guy
I chose yours because it looks so much better, it's angled toward the driver ( easy to just move eyeballs for reference, don't have to turn or move your head). I also chose yours because your work and products rock. :ro) I look forward to your new products coming out.

_nar_ 01-01-2005, 04:51 PM I really like the look of those, but I like to hang my phone from the cubbyhole...
Bmdmax you have a pic of those installed from driver's head position?
dmaxalliTech 01-01-2005, 05:10 PM Having installed a couple already, I dont care the price. We spend so much money on these trucks and if it takes a bit extra to make it look that nice, money well spent.
sp33d 01-01-2005, 05:18 PM Although I don't have one yet I have to say it's the difference between getting the job done and getting the job done right. Getting it done right usually costs a bit more but for those of us that like it done right, we know it pays off. Max Power pretty much hit it on the head with the differences and reasons a Trippin mount is the only way to go.
jholly 01-01-2005, 05:30 PM I'm half way through intalling my ISSPRO EV gauges in the overhead mount. Mine is the black anodized, and I must say they are top notch. After taking the cubby out, they popped in real nice and tight. Fit is excellent. They look real sharp, just like the truck came with them. I'm about half way done, and can't wait to get them working. Need to drill the exhaust and waiting on super diesels intake adapter. Then we are ready to rock.

Redapple 01-01-2005, 07:10 PM I need to chime in here and give credit where credit is due. Tripp has done a great job with his research, and an even better job with the execution of a series of mounts that is exactly what we have been asking for!
I love my Trippin mount and just want to say it is well worth the money!
Thanx Tripp for a job well done!!
I look forward to what you have next!

I will soon. I have a laundry list of goodies to complete over the next few days. Gauges, EGR plate, SD manifold, etc.
I already have the plate done and the SD LLY manifold installed. I am working on the gauge wiring in between New Years festivities. :)
I will try to get a photo write up completed after I am done. :D
BIG DIPPER 01-01-2005, 08:34 PM Brandon, which truck are the gauges going in?
....and what's the other plate in the picture for?
edit: I realize the first question seems silly since you are obviously moding the LLY...I was just thinking you would change yours with as good as they look. I wanted to see them in the full overhead console......
Mitchagain 01-01-2005, 09:51 PM I am way impressed!! I guess I must have been asleep lately, I didnt know Trippin was even offering these. Ok, but now the $64 question is, is there a single guage overhead mount with that particular angle that you just have to glance at? I dont have a Boost guage, and dont feel the need for one, but I have a tough time monitoring the EGT mounted in the overhead. What do you have Trippin?

I gotta tell ya, I really considered putting them in the LB7 but the wife probably would have gotten ticked off. ):h She likes the shiny mount for the new gauges. The Autometer Ultra-Lites would really match my Escalade cluster well but I have too much setup with my overhead currently with the fuel systems, nitrous, Attitude, etc.
I just put the EGR blocker plate in the photo for reference as it was handy at the moment. If you were on the fence about overhead gauges the Trippin mount looks sweet. I wanted to buy the Autometer Nexus gauges but they don't have a boost gauge that will read over 30 pounds. That and you are looking at about a 800 bucks just to put in two gauges.

I could make you a mount with just one gauge. :D
How would you like it?
One gauge right in the middle?
Switches?
What finish?

BTW............if that first picture is the answer to the tilted gauge from ATS........then I wouldn't even consider that in my $40K++++ truck.......
What's less than 1/2 $$$$ as much in cost from ATS , IMHO, isn't even close to being 1/4 as good as Trippin's Mount.........
Hey, but if you guys want to settle for the second best for a little less $$$$$$ , HEY it's your money.........I like the BLING~BLING effect myself.......

akdiesel 01-02-2005, 03:06 AM I love the mount that Guy made for me. fit and finish is excellent and the angle of viewing is the best.
The cost of these mounts is all factored in to the time and equipment that he has put into it. Not every one has access to a milling machine and or access to billet alluminum. You get what you pay for.
I also have to give credit to ATS for starting this trend. If not for them we might not have had this.
BMDMAX, that looks great with the two gauges.
Hey Guy,
I have a 2003 Denali XL with the pocket on the left side that is ideal for nothing. Do you know what I am talking about and if so do you have any ideas for this spot with your machanical ability? I am not sure if the 2003 and newer Duramax trucks have this same pocket or not.

Thanks for the Kudo's and your correct assessment of what it takes to make these things! Thanks to the folks at "ATS Turbo" for the original conception of stashing the Attitude up in the overhead. :ro)
I'm not familiar with the Denali XL but if you can snap a pic, I'll set my mind to work. What would a Denali owner like to stash up there?
Pwdr Extreme 01-02-2005, 01:23 PM Trippin, I too have an '03 Denali XL. That spot he's referring to is where the 4wd selector buttons are on a pickup. I have no idea why GMC uses then entire cubby hole to the right of the radio for the single button to deactivate the stablity control vs. putting it in the same place as the 4wd buttons. I would like to move the stabilty button and put a guage in the cubby hole.
Which leads to my next question, do you build a guage mount that will fit into that cubby hole to the right of the radio?
Trippin 01-02-2005, 01:42 PM Here?
What size gauge?
Angled?
Pwdr Extreme 01-02-2005, 03:35 PM Yep, that's where I mean. I have a SPA DG201 boost/pyro I want to mount there. Or I'm thinking of mountin my other SPA pressure/temp along with it in the overhead. I want them angled so they are easy to read. I see you have SPA guages as well, so you know what I mean about the angle, if you don't have them angled down, they really appear "washed out". Do you have your SPA in the overhead? Is it the new 201 series? Does it seem washed out?
Thanks
Trippin 01-02-2005, 03:38 PM Mine are still on the A-Pillar as I haven't had time to move them to the overhead. :D But they are going up in the overhead very soon!
Pwdr Extreme 01-02-2005, 04:20 PM I had them on the A-pillar in my old truck and they appeared washed out, but readable, I would lean forward some they were much easier to see. SPA informed me they built the guage that way because most people "looked down" on the guage, not "looked up" at it. Let me know how well it works for you in the overhead console. If it works, I'll take one.
Thanks!
DLAnderson 01-03-2005, 08:24 AM Here?
What size gauge?
Angled?
How about a four switch set for this location?

9W3-HD 01-03-2005, 09:16 AM After fightin the ATS mount on install this weekend, I kept thinking to myself, I should of been patient and waited for a Trippin mount. Man those things are poorly designed.
D_Maximus 01-03-2005, 09:48 AM I'm kinda new here so bear with me...
I've got the Predator, and am thinking of staying with just that and some gauges. I'm concerned that for visibility, the gauges would be better served in the A-Pillar? It seems like I'm more likely to notice them there than in the overhead.
Just wondering your thoughts...
svpdiesel 01-03-2005, 11:20 AM I have a SPA guage mounted in that little cubby- it's angled up and toward the driver a little. Here is a photo, if I've done it right...
jbetz 01-03-2005, 12:26 PM Did anybody have to use the Attitude extension cable when mounting the monitor in the overhead console?
9W3-HD 01-03-2005, 12:34 PM No the one they sent me was long enough, a little to spare.
Kennedy 01-03-2005, 12:36 PM I put the dual gauge unit in my 2002 the day after I received it! I'm kinda thinking the black brushed (dull) will be the best look for the dark consoles in the older trucks. Brushed plain matches the light console of the newer trucks I put a brushed plain Attitude unit in the LLY, and now I get to take it back out so I can install an Attitude that works
Brandon, Are you planning compounds for the LLY or something?;) 60 psi
jbetz 01-03-2005, 12:49 PM Thanks 9W3-HD my Juice with the Attitude is suppose to arrive today and I wasn't sure if I was going to need the cable or not.
Trippin 01-03-2005, 01:49 PM John,
IMHO the "polished" mounts look the best against the charcoal grey of the earlier consoles. Both Attitude and Gauge. :D

Ya never know! :D The 60 PSI gauge was only a few bucks more and nobody really seems to know how much boost we can make with the new VVT. If it will make 40 then I am in good shape. I guess I figured to err on the high side was best, as the 30, 35 or 40 pound gauges just did not seem like enough.
akdiesel 01-05-2005, 04:20 AM Guy, I tried to PM you a picture of this but I am unable to do it. So here it is. This the pocket hole on the driverside of the wheel on the Denali XL. Any ideas would be great.
I am at a loss for this wasted space. If it was on my truck it would be great for toggles, but I don't wish to put any lights on this vehicle other than the stock ones.
TheBac 01-05-2005, 08:44 AM You know, I always wondered what went in that blank spot just above the fog light button......

I was thinking of modding the panel with a couple 'Push and Release' fasteners, and reattatching it when visiting a dealer or in a 'questionable' hood..... not like i would ever leave my truck there, but you never know
socalnewbie 01-17-2005, 07:44 PM Trippin,
Beautiful worksmanship really. You've got to like how good these overhead consoles look. Have you considered making one of these for the banks six gun set up with dynafact guages. I was wondering if it was possible to mount both guages to the left with the rotary level selector knob on the right over one of your switches. I'm not sure there is enough space but that would really be functional. In fact if it were possible to engrave numbers 1-6 on the metal near the rotary knob at the right positions, then you wouldn't need to have anything else on there that would say modified to the dealer, it would look like a volume knob or something.
Either way it is definitley worth paying a little extra to have a work of art like this in an already awesome vehicle.
Dave4XTC 02-11-2005, 10:12 AM These things are sweet! but what are the reasons for the switches, what do you hook them up to?
Trippin 02-11-2005, 10:22 AM These things are sweet! but what are the reasons for the switches, what do you hook them up to?
The switches can be used for any accessory such as nitrous arming, propane arming, lift pump, additional lighting, high idle, etc.

dmcmerth 02-11-2005, 05:27 PM I am just wondering what users are actually using the switched for? I am on the ropes about whether to get them or not. I would probably use one for a lift pump from JK when he gets them done. I probably won't ever get nitrous, maybe WI, but I am wondering what to use the second switch for. Any ideas for the not so heavily modded truck enthusiasts?
Chisuzu 02-11-2005, 05:39 PM I will be using one of mine to switch on the back up lights I added for when I'm hooking up at night, etc. Haven't decided on the other one yet. There was really no other place for me to put a switch that wouldn't be asthetically displeasing.

Sorry. I'll enclose installation instructions in the future. :( I have had a few calls regarding this.
1) Drill out the platic rivet heads that hold the black plastic insert into the console with a small drill bit. Just enough to remove the insert. We will use that same mounting to replace the black insert when it is time to go to the dealer.
2) Undo the 4 screws that hold the Attitude together. Then reassemble the Attitude on either side of the lip inside the Trippin mount.
3) Be sure to refer to it as the "Trippin Attitude/Gauge Mount" or the
"SoCal Diesel Attitude/Gauge Mount" leaving out the "ATS". :D :D

JJs DuMax 02-11-2005, 10:05 PM Thanks Trippin. I figured the Attitude had to be put in that way. Being honest though I did try to squeeze it in there for a few minutes. JJs DuMax 02-12-2005, 04:15 PM The original insert doesn't seem to want to come out too easy for me. Any helpful hints on how you got yours out? I've drilled the two tabs on the bottom sides, is there something else? JJ :)

I am installing a combo tool box fuel tank and will use on of the switches to switch tanks. I found a round rocker single pole double throw that looks just like the one's Trippin sends out. The other switch will either run additional backup lights or JK's new lift pump, when it comes out!

JJs DuMax 02-12-2005, 06:56 PM The two tabs I'm talking about are near the front/bottom on each side of the black insert doohickey thing (techie talk). Are there any pins, Trippin you mentioned rivets or something like that. Pictures would sooooooooooo helpful!

JJs DuMax 02-12-2005, 10:01 PM :grd: A picture is worth a thousand words! Trippin, YOU DA MAN! :D
Judging from the picture it looks like the rivets you are talking about must be under the rubber mat thingy. Didn't look there. Mama JJ just rolled her eyes at me when she saw the picture. I scratched the casing in a couple of places using a screwdriver trying to pry the Censored thing out. She has absolutely no appreciation for the power I'm adding to her, err our truck! ;)
Tomorrows a new day. I'll be back out there with my new found knowledge. Yeah Trippin, "idiot proof" directions would be helpful. Later. JJ :)
Trippin 02-12-2005, 10:47 PM You have to remove the console from the roof of the truck. There is one bolt in front and then just clips in the rear. Once you undo the front with a phillips, just pull straight down. Then unplug the wires and take to the work bench to drill the rivets. The picture I showed you is the insert as if you were looking down from the roof of the truck.

Is this OK?
JJs DuMax 02-13-2005, 09:03 PM Trippin, that last piece of advice did the trick! :ro) I tried taking the overhead console down but didn't know whether it popped out or what. Yanked that bad boy down, drilled it, and had the attitude hooked up and running in 10 minutes.
For those of you doing this I learned a couple of things I can share. Remove the visor clip closest to the console to run the wire. Leave yourself a good 12"-18" of extra cord so you have enough play to work the attitude thru the mount. Otherwise it gets hard to hold the console up while trying to put those little screws back into the attitude. BTW, the warranty sticker for the E/J sticks right over the seam. I could have used a razor knife to cut through the seam, but I just peeled it back, inserted the attitude in the ATS mount, put the back onto the attitude being careful not to pinch the warranty label in the seam and replaced the screws.
Really a sharp looking unit. Later. JJ :)

Big Dog Diesel 1 03-30-2005, 11:35 PM Can you please tell me how I can get one of those tippin gauge mounts ? I need to chime in here and give credit where credit is due. Tripp has done a great job with his research, and an even better job with the execution of a series of mounts that is exactly what we have been asking for!
I love my Trippin mount and just want to say it is well worth the money!
Thanx Tripp for a job well done!!
I look forward to what you have next!
Bill
