We drove up to the Sierra last Sunday. I bought diesel at a small but relatively busy station at the base of the mountain. I put in my normal 4 oz of Stanadyne and about 14 gal of fuel. We drove over the mountain and to the rental office to pick up the keys to our rental unit. I left the truck running while I went into the office.

We then went across the street to a grocery store. I turned the truck off. We shopped for about 30 minutes. Came out, truck fired right up. I drove it about 100' to the parking lot exit, stopped and the truck died. Tried to start it, but no joy.

It occured to me to try to re-prime the fuel system (thanks to info from this group). That seemed to work fine and the truck fired up right away. We drove it the rest of the week with no issues.

My question is what would cause this seemingly random loss of fuel pressure. Can I expect it to happen again? This time it was fairly convenient as I was at a parking lot exit with no traffic to deal with. I'd hate to have it happen to my wife at a busy intersection.

A few details. I do have the Nicktane filter installed. The truck has about 3500 miles on it. I've been running Stanadyne since the first tank at about 4 oz per 13-15 gallons of diesel. There was a big temperature differential between when we filled up and when it stalled (about 20 degrees F, ambient outside temp).

Did you do anything at all to the fuel system in the last few days? Later! Frank

Nope. The Nicktane was installed at about 1K miles. The only other recent change is I moved into my 2nd 1/2 gallon bottle of Stanadyne for this trip. Otherwise, it's just been fill ups.

I had a problem once, where this has happened to me, and all I did was open the gas cap to relieve some pressre. The heat, at that time 110*, for some reason, caused some back pressure to the tank. i had just moved my truck, 5 minutes before, 30 ft in order to load all my tools up and turnbed it off. Once I tried to start, seemed to me needing to be primed again, but my dad suggested to open the gas cap and tighten back up. Oddly enough, it worked. Some sort of back pressure holding the fuel back or something.

How 'bout checking your hose clamp connections on the fuel lines for your Nicktane to make sure you don't have an air leak. Maybe weather expansion / contraction creates a slight leak - just guessing though.
