I have a 2003 Dodge Diesel with a 6 spd manual shift. I have some problem shifting into 1st or Reverse occasionally. I frequently have to shift into a higher gear then work my way into these gears, It just won't always slide in like I expect. Is this normal? Once I'm driving the gears slip in and out easily, but when stopped it won't work smoothly. I'd appreciate any feedback.

sometimes happens on mine too... i find just putting it in neutral, clutch out, back in and it will go into gear easially then...

Just slightly ease the clutch out while starting to put it in reverse. Push the clutch back in and it should go into gear easily.

If you want to practice buy a Harley Davidson or older BMW motorcycle. It's quite common.

I have the same issues with my transmission. Make sure that you're at a complete stop. Believe it or not, this DOES make a difference. If I'm moving even a small amount, it really won't want to go into 1st or Reverse.

Basically just deal with it. This is a big, heavy, truck transmission. It probably doesn't even have synchros for 1st and reverse.

here is a quote from the factory service manual...

The NV5600 is a six speed constant mesh manual
transmission (Fig. 1). All gear ranges including
reverse are synchronized. First and second gears utilize
dual cone synchronizers in order to aid shifting.
Sixth gear is an overdrive range. The transmission
uses cast iron for the gear case and extension/
adapter housing and aluminum for the clutch housing.

I appreciate the replies. At least I know my truck is normal. It's new for me but I recently did a few tousand miles in just a couple days towing heavy and I've never experienced anything like it. There's no end to the pull!
Now I need to change the oil and learn a bit about that. Just need a couple days above zero here in Michigan.

Yes, its normal to have an occosional problem with getting into those gears. Not a daily occurance but it happens.
