: glow plug system dead
curtis lipinski 12-31-2004, 07:05 PM The glow plug light now takes 30 seconds to go out in 40 degrees. When it only took 2 before in 1 degree weather before. Threw code U0106 the dealer tells me that this is normal for the lly. Help I think thier wrong.I have read that it should only take 3 seconds some where for the new glow plug system. What does this code mean.
jholly 12-31-2004, 08:18 PM U0106 - Lost Communication with Glow Plug control Module.
You got a bad module or a loose plug.
Tell the dealer this is not normal for a LLY engine and he needs to break out his tech II and service manual and fix the problem. Best bet find a dealer that knows his elbow from his a$$.

curtis lipinski 12-31-2004, 09:41 PM How do you find out what the codes mean. Can you get off line. Agin thanks for the help.

McRat 12-31-2004, 10:33 PM Your dealer is full of it. There is no such thing as a "normal" check engine light. It filters out normal behavior by counting how many times it sees the error before it sets the code.
Just for laughs, go and have him "prove" it's normal with one of the trucks on the lot. The coldest I've started my truck was 31 deg so far, and the glow plug lights for about 2 seconds MAX, usually less.
jmg343 01-01-2005, 04:45 AM how detrimental to the glow plug system is it if one starts the truck before the light goes out? I imagine the warmer it is outside the less harmful it would be, but thats just an assumption. My girlfriend has done it twice so far (that Ive seen). Once more and shes a goner.
far rider 01-02-2005, 06:17 PM I had the same problem, 04 dmax with 12,300 miles. Code U0106. Dealer said I need a new glow plug module. Naturally, the part is not in stock so its on order. Hope this is not the begining of more electronic woes.
lakingslayer 01-05-2005, 04:05 PM Curtis,
Did you find out what went wrong with your glow plugs? I got the same code today.
curtis lipinski 01-05-2005, 06:58 PM The dealer finaly said that their was a proublem the glow plug modual thay said is bad now had to order it. I should have the new part in Friday. Hopefully this will fix it because it is getting worse with the colder temps. Will let you know if this fixed it. Good luck with your proublem.
lakingslayer 01-05-2005, 08:37 PM Thanks Curtis. I don't have a problem with the light staying on for an extenced period of time but the good ole CEL came on. My pigtail light comes on like it always has for about 1 to 2 sec. I'm getting it in tomorrow and hopefully they will be able to figure it out. Hopefully your problem will go away with the new module.
lakingslayer 01-06-2005, 10:55 AM Update for anyone who is interested. It's 42deg according to my trucks thermometer. The glowplug indicator stays on for 20sec. Sounds like I have exactly the same problem Curtis has. I hope this doesn't start happening to others as well.
I got a message from the dealer and they ordered a Glow Plug module. Supposed to be in tomorrow.
curtis lipinski 01-09-2005, 08:43 AM Dealer installed new modual friday, so far so good. Light goes off like before, and starts ok now. Just installed predator at the 40hp. setting Saturday. IT ok. but I dont like the way it installs. IT dosent tell you if it was installed properly,or if it took. The new settings. The Hypertech was better. I cant tell if the new tire changes took? Help.
lakingslayer 01-12-2005, 10:41 AM Still waiting for the glow plug module for mine. It only fails at cold temps (below 50deg). Since it has warmed up a bit here it's been working like it should. It's good to know that it seems to be the problem.
JimmyDel 01-12-2005, 11:55 AM lakingslayer-
your module needs to be replaced, but you can get your current module working again (at least for awhile) by disconnecting both the connectors on the module for about a minute and then re-connecting them.

Maybe that is what the dealer did? I don't know but it seems to work fine now but I'm still going to have it replaced when it comes in. Thanks for the info. Also does the Module sit on top of the engine under the black plastic resonator?
JimmyDel 01-12-2005, 03:44 PM yea...on the drivers side of the engine on the back side toward the top...black plactic box about 3.5 inches square. Since you are California Emissions, your check engine light would be on if there was a current communications problem. Your module has a yellow paint dot on the top, and the new one will have a green paint dot signifying that it has the new software that corrects this problem.

Yup! Got a green dot now. Thanks for the info.
