Questions, Questions..... How many miles, any early warning signs, etc........???
On edit : Also, are you running any tuners, boost enhancers, etc? What mods to your truck that could have helped this event along?

It's pretty rare, but certainly can happen if the turbo shaft fails and turbo bearing oil is being pumped into the intake. The engine has nothing to stop it (if it doesn't break mechanically) other than cutting off fuel or air. The engine is running on lubricating oil which is being pumped to the intake under pressure by the engine oil pump until it eats enough to run dry. Many people don't realize that there is no control that will keep a diesel from running away on external fuel sources and that's why they put air shutoffs on oil patch vehicles (and now some sled pulling vehicles).

I wouldn't worry too much about it happening to you - one in a million chance, but if it were commonplace or a reasonably expected risk, all diesels would come with air shutoff devices OEM.

I dont know about 1 in a million chances . A lot of people who blew turbos have had a run away. Id say it is not that uncommon on turbo blow up. Mine ran away but I was able to drop it in low gear fast and stall it. Juice had a run away, maybe several !

Im not poking at ya IDLE, Im just pointing out that if you run a tune that will fuel ya past 30lbs , you are risking a turbo blow up. That may cause a run away. I carry a flat piece of polycarbonate board 6"x6" with a handle so I can choke mine out if it runs away.

No problem CAP, it's certainly more of a probability for a raced engine and should probably mean that an air shutoff may be a necessary mod for high HP. However, other Max owners with stock or low power mods shouldn't be worrying that it may just "happen" to them. How many failed turbo runaways have we seen reported on the board? Five? Six? No poke at you, either, but it's a pretty low percentage.

Had our 1987 Mercedes 300SDL Run away from me on the hiway in 01 before I knew alot about diesels

I was cruising at 75 and let off to slow down and it didn't happen, I tromped on the gas to see if maybe it was stuck and it kept accelerating  I turned off the key and it kept pulling. I freaked at this point and popped it into neutral, the engine went nuts, close to 6 grand. I looked back and I was blacking out the whole road with smoke. I opened the hood and tried the "STOP" button on the IP, nothing. I had no business getting near the motor but was dumb as hell. I ripped off the intake tube and fed it my shirt :D

The local FD showed up with an ambulance and the cops, lol. Thought the car was on fire. The tailpipe left a huge black mark on the ground.

Not knowing what happened I did some research and found a recall on the trap oxidizer. It was a cat mounted between the manifold and the turbo instead of after the turbo. Evidently the ceramic would break up and destroy the turbo.

Moral of the story: MB covered it 9 years and 7 months after the recall was issued in 91. Hope they fix yours for free too
