: LLY Turbo Whistle
sp33d 12-31-2004, 04:27 PM Just curious to know what the turbo whistle on the LLY VVT is like? I test drove one and it seemed to be a bit louder than a stock LB7, but no where near as loud as my LB7. With an AFE intake does it get louder? Anything else make it louder? Whistle loudness is a cool factor for me so I need all I can get :ro)
partsguy662 12-31-2004, 04:36 PM sp33d - you need to hear one with aftermarket exhaust sometime.especially with the high idle function working...when I fire mine up a work and go back inside, the guys think there is a jet about to take off in the parking lot http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
sp33d 12-31-2004, 05:24 PM That's what I like to hear, and hear! :) I will hear one with an aftermarket exhaust very soon.
_nar_ 12-31-2004, 10:02 PM Mine seems to have a nice little whistle right now, so I can't wait to get it straight piped and see how it sounds...
lakingslayer 12-31-2004, 11:21 PM Get CATless with an aftermarket exhaust and EGR defeater and you should have a good increase of turbo whistle.
Aron420 01-01-2005, 12:50 AM straight piped kicks ass, I love the sound.
jmg343 01-01-2005, 04:39 AM i gotta 5" straight and my truck sounds like a fighter jet. the turbo whistles so loud and clear that it concerned me at first, i thought it was gonna go so hard it was gonna blow itself up. But its fine and sounds SICK!!!

baimpala 01-01-2005, 09:21 AM I've seen at least one person mention that getting the reflash done seems to make the turbo whistle louder. . . Maybe because the engine is quieter?
I never really thought my turbo was that loud until I had someone say they thought it sounded great. Maybe it's just harder to hear inside the cab. ratlover also mentioned that putting an AFE II on made it sound like a 'banshee' IIRC.

vetterdstr 01-01-2005, 09:55 AM In its stock form the whistle can be heard very well in the cab...
I have to laugh at this kind of thinking though... because I came from a Corvette Forum where we were constantly modding our cars to the hilt.. looks like you guys are just as bad as the Corvette guys!! ):h :ro)
Here is a pic of my setup.

dpower 01-01-2005, 06:50 PM vetterdstr....actually I think we may be worse....at least your not modding the snot out of something you depend on for a daily driver!! Awesome lookin vette by the way...that may make Mcrat jealous(Mcrat is a member on the board as well...and also drag races a vette)
Z71 Grizzly 01-01-2005, 09:56 PM Anybody have any sound clips of the LLY with exhaust modifications ? :) Does the whistling sound like an old Mack truck or something?
05LLY2500HD 01-01-2005, 10:11 PM Anybody have any sound clips of the LLY with exhaust modifications ? :) Does the whistling sound like an old Mack truck or something?Yeah that would be great, anyone? I am planning on exhuast soon, straight pipe may be the way to go.?
With "elevated idle" on it sounds bad (good) At first I thought it was gonna self destruct.
jmg343 01-01-2005, 10:23 PM Mel-
I did get a CEL. I havent pulled the codes out of it yet but I imagine they have something to do with the EGR not having enough back pressure to function properly. I installed a fingers stick and no more light. I also unplugged my egr once the stick was in and no lights. The CEL that I got at first, when I did the exhaust but still had egr plugged in, scared me at first but after some research I found out why it most likely came on and that there was nothing wrong or forcasted in the near future. The new sound my truck had too it wasnt what I expected either and added to my fears. But thanks to the fingers stick and a little getting used to I love the whole package now.
Z71 Grizzly 01-02-2005, 10:03 PM I listened to Brandon's sound clips but they didn't give me a good description of how the exhaust sounds at all types of driving. What does yours sound like with the 5" straight pipe on it jmg343?

At first I wasnt too keen on it. However, once the truck warms up it sounds so evil! At idle it sounds like a jet fighter taxing down a runway but you can hear the grumble within. At 1700-2200 RPM it sounds incredible, probably the best. Above 2200 she really barks, scares the people you pass. At 75-80 on the highway it sounds real good in the cab with no radio or other noise. Some people speak of a drone, I think Ive heard/hear what they are talking about but it is definitely not a bad drone, I happen to really like it. It comes on a little stronger when you let off the throttle. Oh yeah, the turbo. The turbo whistles like hell, it rules. You cant miss it even just rolling out of your driveway. I love it.
baimpala 01-03-2005, 08:05 AM Mel,
If you are getting or worried about the CEL, get yourself a Finger Stick. I put mine in yesterday and this thing is great. NO codes any more. Install took under an hour and I work slow. Very easy, and is pretty incognito when you are done. Unless you noticed the extra tape around the split loom, you would have a hard time noticing it.
9W3-HD 01-03-2005, 09:10 AM The juice made my 5 inch strait pipe sound "wicked" I thought it sounded good before but now talk about a jet taking off, I coulnt believe it, no cat here either.
