After my truck has been sitting a few hours I get a noise in the steering column the first time I turn the wheel either way. It only does it once and has a more of a sound like a lock tumbler falling (much louder though) than a "clunck". After the first turn it will not do it again until it sits for a few hours.
Is this the infamous intermediate steering shaft clunk? It's been doing it since day one.
FYI - my truck's steering shaft was bent at the factory so bad that it had to be replaced before I took delivery. ......steering would lock up.

It may be the typical steering shaft clunk, but I was under the impression that the new-design shaft was being used starting with the 04's. If that's the case then it may be something else, seeing as how yours is an 05.
And that something else might be related to your last statement; why was the original shaft bent so badly? Was the truck in some type of accident? I can't see it leaving the factory that way.

It was built on a Friday / Saturday and I watched it come off the truck on Tuesday AM at the dealer (I live close to the plant). During dealer prep on Tuesday for Tuesday PM delivery I got a call from the dealer who said that the Delivery truck driver noted the steering was sticking. A tech took a look at it during prep for Tuesday PM delivery and found the steering shaft was bent. Nearest anyone could figure something must have happened on the line during assembly. They swapped a steering shaft on it from another new truck on the lot as I needed to take delivery.

It doesn't sound like the common steering shaft clunk. I would guess it is most likely related to the original problem.

Eric,
R U saying that the infamous "clunk" can occur on & off dependant on colder weather??
Now that I think about it - it may only do it when weather is chilly
Rob
