: Lost Power Cel said Fuel Filter
It was cold here this morning and I let the truck warm up for a few minutes and started down the road. I went maybe a mile and started to lose power, it won't go above 2000 on the tach. The cel said check fuel filter. I just filled up with fuel yesterday from the same place I always get fuel, the truck only sat for 7 hours and ran fine last night. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be. The truck has 1020 miles on it. I don't know anything about codes and don't have anything to find out what code was set off. I'm new to the Duramax scene. Any help is appreciated.

Unit453 01-03-2008, 11:43 AM Your fuel gelled up. Its common this time of year. You may want to think about running anti gel additives.
Also changing the fuel filter at or around every 10k miles is a must this time of year.
It hit -20 last night up here and I hope mine's ok as well. I do run 16 ounces of Stanadyne in every tank.
Jason Duramax 01-03-2008, 11:51 AM BBAR, I just posted on this problem...same deal here. Just fueled up, just parked it about 8 hours prior. My thoughts of gelling seem to be backed up by the more wiser members here. Hard to believe this much trouble wasn't even to -20*.
TRMN8R 01-03-2008, 12:47 PM As previously stated, if you're NOT running an additive, read this (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728). It's especially important up here in the N where it gets very cold.............hope this helps!
WOW, I never thought it would gel up. I had a dodoge for several years and it never did that. It is supposed to warm up tomorrow and I will get some power service to run through it. Thanks for the help.

BARTLow single digits in Denver earlier this week - truck is parked outside, no problems with gelling or starting.
I just talked to the service dept and they said it was gelled. He said that I have a 3 micron fuel filter and if I'm not running an additive or parking it inside a garage I run the chance of gelling. They told me to run Staydyne in it, because it is endorced by GM. It is going to get warmer here the next few days so that will help and I will keep it plugged in for awhile and get some additive. The service guy said I can run any additive as long as it doesn't contain alcohol because our trucks have a fuel separator and alcohol makes the water bond to the fuel so it will burn out through the engine, we want an additive that will separate the water from the fuel so the fuel filter does not become gelled. He also told me that I have less volume going into the fuel filter than my old truck had. It was only -2 here which is cold but not really cold. Thanks for the help.

TRMN8R 01-03-2008, 01:41 PM x2 on that, and remember, that the fuel is different than what you were running before. This ULSD formation is different. That's why I sent you the link to read.
Jason Duramax 01-03-2008, 01:42 PM Are you, or did you change the filter yet? Or are you just going to try and run it since your miles are so low. Just curious as to how it will run after.
Coolbreeze 01-03-2008, 02:33 PM I think you should be reasonably thankful that the stupid WIF thing worked. From what I understand many of them don't until it is too late.
BTW you can find Standyne pretty easily on-line. A case is $60 dollars more or less and when I use it every other tankful it lasts me for about a year.

BBAR I live in CT too (berlin). My truck started and ran fine this morning but check engine light poped on. Wondering if this too is weather related its never happened before. Code is P046C I am going to look it up as soon as i finish this post.
skammtoo 01-03-2008, 03:16 PM Hey BBAR, where in Ct are you located? It sounds like you have almost the twin to the truck I have on order.
Let us know how this turns out.

fire0021 01-03-2008, 05:19 PM p046c egr sensor performance sound like mabey your egr got stuck
yesterday before I went to work I started my truck and left it run for awhile and it seemed OK. I didn't drive it to work though. I plugged it in last night when I got home and unplugged it this morning, started it and left it run for awhile. I drove it and it was fine, the CEL went off and the truck seemed fine. The fuel filter which was at 97% is now at 0% and I have a message at start up to change the filter. The book calls what happened as "Waxing", and after the truck is in a warm spot the fuel filter is fine and it does not have to be changed. The dealer said it would be a good idea to change it. What is everyone's thought on this. I have 1000 or 1100 miles on the truck. The truc would run but I didn't have full power. I also have some additive in the fuel now so this doesn't happen again.

Schweinmesser 01-04-2008, 04:25 PM i would change your fuel filter.
DuraMaxxedOut 01-06-2008, 01:36 PM i would change your fuel filter.\
X2 change it. I replaced mine when dic said I still had about 50 something % fuelfilter life left because I was having fuel starvation problems which have been cured. I think the first fuel filter change is the most important and should be doen before 10000 miles no matter what. Just my .02
