Define loud.. not to be a smarta$$, but loud can mean different things to different people, what I may consider loud, you may not..

Anyways, I can hear the "ticking" noise of my motor if it's quiet, can't hardly hear it at all in traffic.

mine gets petty loud when its really cold. I started it up tonight after work at about 15 degrees F ambient. It sounded like my friends 7.3 for a few sec till it warmed up some. If its warm i only hear a little ticking under load and that seems to be normal

I've always felt my LB7 was a lot louder than others I have heard running. Maybe its the diversity of the injectors and how good/bad they are, tuning, exhaust, or a combination of all three. Dont really know.

There was another thread about this, someone mentioned adjusting valve lash, should be no more than .012. excessive valve lash from what I have been told is nothing to worry about, these engines have solid lifters on them. I am thinking about getting mine done, but the 500.00 bucks is stopping me right now.

Ticking is injectors , Its normal. Its anoying but normal as long as your rates and return is fine. These were not the best designed injector. The tapping could be due to ULSF try some cetane boost and add a qrt of 2 cycle Mercury motor oil to the fuel. It will quiet everything down

Mine is loud under load only. When not towing it's quieter than other diesels (ford, dodoge)of the same age. Did get slightly quieter with additives, 2 stroke etc. Mine is certainly louder than lly ,lbz, lmm. Stock exhaust and intake.

My lb7 was noisey. I did not realize how noisey untill I had the injectors replaced. After the injectors were replaced its half as noisey. Get your injectors checked.

Pull up next to a old Ferd 7.3 if you want to know what 'loud' is!

Does it shake the whole truck? lol When I had an injector go out, the knock was retatded at idle, shook the whole truck, and blew black smoke.

I agree with sparky1562 (is that IBEW), go for a ride in cummings, if your new to diesel the sounds take getting use too, also you may have to get use to the rad fan running for 3 to5 minutes at start up in the extream cold and warm weather (mine has done it for the last 6 years).

good luck

drive safeI know what you are talking about!I thought somethiing was wrong with my truck the first time I heard it when it got warm last summer. As for the ticking sound it seems to have a loud knock to it but not like a 7.3 or cummins, slightly louder than than a solid cam set up like in my street car.

No, not IBEW. Actually just a random number and a bit of mistake! But I can remember it!

I thought something was wrong with mine to in the cold weather on start up until I read on here that it was the fan clutch! I love this site!

Mine is fairly quiet at idle, but on acceleration that changes to an engine that sounds like the valves are way out of adjustment!
