can anyone recommend a good air compressor that one could mount under his or her truck, one that will hold a large amount of psi and will be suitable for, say, a set of trainhorns, er sumthin like that

Dont go with a toy compressor, if you want serious air power, go with Viair 450.

Viair also sells tanks.

The 450 pumps up my 6 gallon tank from 0 to 130 in about 5 minutes.

They handle my Nathan's Air Chime K5LA's with no problem

Most guys use the Viair pumps for air ride suspensions, so pumping up tanks for horns is a breeze and should last forever.

What could you do if you wanted to maybe hook up air horns with all the trimmings and have secondary dixie horns too? I have two horns on my Z71 now and will be putting two on my Dmax when I get it. I don't use stock wussy horn, I use an ooga horn and dixie horns and run them on a switch while still using the steering wheel for horn controls.

If you want to get really serious...consider an engine driven compressor.
I use one in my truck for the air suspensions air need.:ro):ro):ro)

I use the ExtremeAire w/a 2.5 Gallon air tank. Powers my impact wrench to spin tires off the truck as well as my offroad 6-wheeler. I have a Nathan P3 Airchime on the truck - keeps the tank filled quite nicely.

Do a search on E-bay for Viair 450, you should get lots of replys.

I looked at the engine compressor and that would be the ultimate fast fill but if for some reason it siezed, you are down since it will break the belt. I just didnt want another reason to be broke down somewhere.

I have the 450 Viair on my truck and it is set up to shut off at 145 psi. Works great and I have had it in for over a year now.
If you realy want air go with the http://www.vmac.ca/underhood/index.htm for all of your air needs. We have them on our work trucks and no need for air tanks. There are some issues with very cold temps but so far the one I have on my work truck it is working fine at -20 f temps.

I've had problems with the engine mounted compressor we use at work. If your just using it for horns go with the viair.
