Front axle collar is locked via electonic solenoid and transfer case mode fork is moved engaging the front driveshaft.

So the spiders are being driven by one of the front shafts while in 2x?

The right axle is disengaged in 2wd. Yes, the spiders spin. Driven by the left wheel/axle.
