I am wondering if I should be using a fuel treatment for the winter. Checked with the dealer and they say no, its not needed. I tend not to trust them on these things (many things!). Temps around here range from the lower teens at night to the 30's/40's during the day.
The fuel used is already treated in bulk, is this enough?
What type of treatment, how much, and how often?
Will it void any warranty?
Thanks,
L.Tik
skoryaro2 12-27-2004, 03:15 PM Many here use an additive as do I. Do a search on this site and you can read for hours. Personally I use Stanadyne or Power Service (the latter is much cheaper). To me it is cheap insurance against a winter gell-up
GM says to make sure an additive "does not contain alcohol"
Kennedy 12-27-2004, 03:40 PM I run my FPPF Total Power and 8 Plus Cetane improver blend year round. Good idea tomaintain a clean, well lubricated fuel system.
L.TIK 12-27-2004, 04:00 PM Thanks for the input!
How much per tank full should I add?
I have some Power Service, but it does not say its alcohol free. Is it all alcohol free?
NCMIC 12-27-2004, 04:29 PM I use the power service when I have no Stanadyne. As per recommendations, Stanadyne is the only one recognized from GM. http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/showfile.asp?id=1687
this is a link for GM's Approval of Stanadyne and the GM Bulletin Number is there as well. You'll need adobe acrobat reader in order to view it as it is a .pdf file. As far as amount to use, the more the better on most of them. Read the bottles for recommended doseage and add a little extra for the cheaper stuff.

Yes, the Power Service is alcohol free.

Fuel Power by www.lubecontrol.com is the way to go! Read up over at www.bobistheoilguy.com
We are a sponsor here and have many customers switch from the products mentioned above.
briano 12-27-2004, 06:20 PM A GM Diesel Mechanic told me that in January the oil companies are going to quit putting the additive in the fuel at the pump so everyone that has a diesel will have to use an aftermarket additive. He said GM is pushing Stanadyne for this. I already ordered a case.

I find that hard to believe. The trucking companies all over the country would be in an uproar over this. Plus the fuel would then gell up at the pumps.
briano 12-27-2004, 06:31 PM someone else had vouched for this in another thread..I'll have to find it. So far this guy has been completely cool with me and he drives a diesel as well. I'll call him tomorrow and see if there is some documented proof of this anywhere at GM.
Thanks, I'd like to know. We have 10,000 gallons of fuel delivered here about 3-4 times a week. I don't know how we would blend that ourselves.

Exactly One of the reasons (other than price) that I'm switching to Power Service.
Diesel Power 12-27-2004, 08:23 PM i run primrose 405 for the california temps. if its cold, i'd run the 409. have also run FPPF..
Please read up on what our products can do. Hands down best fuel add on the market. Read the following links from BITOG. Do your own search and see what others are saying. All we ask is to consider this product.
www.lubecontrol.com
Fuel Power is special blend of chemicals designed to clean your vehicle’s fuel system and increase the potential energy in the fuel mixture. This in turn will potentially increase fuel mileage and lengthen vehicle running time. This product will not only clean but protect a vehicle’s fuel system by leaving a thin protective lubricating coat over vital fuel system parts including fuel pump, gas tank and fuel injectors. Fuel Power also acts as a fuel stabilizer by dissolving carbon deposits and lowering the fuel mixture freezing points in both gas and diesel fuels.

Has anyone else heard about not running a winter blend at the pumps?
corona 12-27-2004, 11:08 PM I've heard it, but I've only heard it here - so that's not really a confirmation.
corona 12-27-2004, 11:11 PM Also, I'm trying standadyne (this is my first tank right now). I've been running Diesel power from Wally World and I'm not happy with my mileage.
I can report back after I get two tanks through with the new treatment.
TCFenton1 12-28-2004, 11:16 AM I'm using Stanadyne Performance Formula in mine. Can't say that I've noticed any difference, one way or the other. Seems like it should be good for the fuel system though.
TDiesel 12-28-2004, 12:14 PM I use Howes now for 3 years in my Diesels. This last weekend I was up in Mn around Park Rapids and it hit -35 at the cabin #2 and Howes in the tank. No problems. It wasnt even pluged in(couldnt find the cord). I didnt want to start it until I could plug it in but had to get it to the dealer they were closeing do to the holiday. The dealer pulled it out for me while they were fixing my intercooler tub, it had come apart at one of the bends. You can find Howes at almost every truck stop.
Triffid 12-28-2004, 12:57 PM Primrose Power-Master 405 here... Have used it almost a year now without any problems.........Triffid
briano 12-28-2004, 05:03 PM Ok, just wanted to clarify about what I had said earlier about the Diesel fuels and all..
Just called the Diesel guy at GM... he says the EPA is going to remove the sulfer in the diesel fuel in January which will cut down on lubrication of the injectors. he said the LLY should be fine after running the current diesel or additive for 100 gallons or so, so the injectors break in. He said you shouldn't need an additive, but should not be any problems using one. I told him I still was using Stanadyne and he said that was just fine.
From what he told me this may be an issue for newer diesels not running the current diesel blend, but after using an additive for a while should be fine.
Sorry for the confusion, hope this clears that up.
Duramaxdave 12-29-2004, 03:38 PM Hey Diesel Power
I just started using Primrose 409 too, do you know if it's alcohol free? :ro)
