: Is this normal?

I took my truck into a dealership Tuesday, December 22nd at 8 am.

I told them I feel/hear a surge at 1000rpm and at about 5mph. I also told them I hear a belt squealing upon start during cold mornings (started the day after we got it)-hasn't been cold enough lately for it to do that but doesn't hurt to have it looked at while it was there. They offered me a free wash-I accepted.

At 1:43 pm I received a call from the dealership. They said they were done. Unfortunately, the surge is normal for these engines and I "will just have to learn to live with it" and since it hasn't been too cold in the mornings the squeal could not be replicated-if I could bring it in over night so they can have the first start in the morning they may be able to catch it. They will have their shuttle service call me to pick me up to take me to my truck. Fine.

After 30 minutes I got tired of waiting for the shuttle service to call me and called the dealership. After another 30 minutes the shuttle service picked me up.

I walk up to the cashier's desk, sign the papers and they say they will bring my truck around.

After 15 minutes they bring my UNWASHED truck around.

So, aside from waiting for over 6 hours for my truck when only two other vehicles were ahead of me (I don't know what vehicles they had left to work on the previous day), the rude 12-year-old little witch working at the cashier's desk, my truck not being washed, and apparently no service performed on my truck......

Has anyone else been told the surge is "normal?" I'm sorry, but we just got in from vacation and I lost patience (I think I'm losing conciousness too) looking for the thread on this subject.

I had my belt replaced for the squeaking. They called and said they couldn't duplicate it but offered a free wash. I said yes, so after they washed it FINALLY it sqeaked so they ordered a new one. With the surge i have noticed mine does it when i am slightly pressing the accelerator going around five miles an hour ( mostly in parking lots ). It does this frequently, but there have been posts about it and people say it is your foot, I don't buy it. I also read somewhere there is a flash for this but I have looked and can't find where it was posted.

search this conference for threads with the word "surge".. It is not normal, there is a reflash for it. There are a few topics on it in here.

Belt squeek (chirp) when shutting down is normal. When starting... not normal..

No cure for the surge from GM. Some people push the pedal through that range and do not notice it, some people do. The more you drive in that range the more the truck does it. I've come to believe it has something to do with the transmission interface. Lots of trucks show this symptom, and I have been told GM is working on it from customer relations, but I wouldn't hold my breath. As for the belt squeal on start up, it is also a known problem with a bulletin from GM. The repair can be seen without being heard, but you need someone at the dealership to care enough to look into it. Good luck! There seems to be an epidemic of complacency among dealerships of all brands that, I think, is driven by cutbacks on warranty times and rates from the manufacturers and the dealers need (greed) to make more profit with undertrained staff. It is tough to keep up with the quickly changing technology of todays vehicles(more training more often), but a belt squeal is not one of those technical things. There is simply no profit in the repair. Thanx Geo.

The "reflash" is GM's cure for the "surge". I had surging and rough idle problems all summer and was able to get the Duramax Quality Manager at GM involved in my repair. At first they replaced all eight injectors because the reflash wasn't ready yet. After it became available they applied it anyways. No more rough idle and no more surge with over an additional 10k miles. As for the belt squeak, I had that as well. First they replaced the belt and that lasted all of two days. They then replaced the idler arm pulley's and it cleared it up. When the DMax Quality Manager was reviewing my case for the other problem he spotted this in the repair history. He shipped a new power steering bracket to the dealership to be installed. According to him, they had several that were not machined correctly and was causing the bearings in the pulleys to go bad quick. My truck was built in Feb. 04' and I have to assume they have since corrected this problem at the production level.

she has an 05 so she probably has the latest code on hers. Its only for Duramaxs that were purchased before September of 04.

as far as the belt issue..I would take it back, have them wash it and the squeak will probably come back. pretty sad how quickly they mark things as "fixed" and not take the time to reproduce it.

good luck

I believe one of the Techs (Max Payne?) posted a note saying that some of 2005 trucks arriving in October still did not have the new flash that came out in Sept., 2004 for the LLY.

Thanks guys.

Thanks Briano, I do not have smoke though. I called two dealerships, one (the one in CO where we bought it) said it could be the beginning of the injectors going and the other dealer (here in AZ) said it was normal...

I simply won't accept that this is normal. Never have I experienced this in a diesel unless it was my foot-this is not my foot causing this. However, I can't seem to find a decent dealership here and I have no smoke-am I going to have to keep taking it in until it smokes and hope that then someone will do something?

I will wait a little longer on the belt issue. It will get a little colder here and quite cold (for AZ anyway) in the mornings and that will be when I take it in...after testing it myself first (starting it a couple times to make sure they don't need me to leave it there overnight-work isn't always accommodating, and after a wash to see if that makes it squeal).

I'm book-marking this thread and when I'm tired of dealing with lazy morons (already am actually!) I'll print this little puppy out along with the email Briano sent me.

The belt squeak/chirp on mine did not start until 3500 miles it came and went until around 7500 miles. The squeak only got unbearable once during week of rain. Now with 15,000 the belt has been quiet wet or dry for the last 7500 miles :).

The surge I think is the start of the EGR valve just starting to work i.e. open/modulate/close. From what I read in the forum some trucks are much worse than others. Fortunately mine is barely noticeable, I've not had the ECM flash done nor a visit to the Dealer (yet).

I'm snake bit when it comes to taking my truck into a Dealer. I always seem to come out with more problems/damage/finger prints than I went in with. I'll do the work myself when able in less time than it takes to drop off/pickup the truck. I guess I should go and make friends with the Dealer diesel technicians just in case! ):h

Good luck.
