What size winch? The trailer wiring is only 40 amps - which won't power a very big winch - maybe a 1,200 lb superwinch for boats/atv's.

I have a 12,000 lb Milemarker that is mounted on 2" barstock so it will fit in any hitch. I don't remember for sure, but it seems to me I used 2 gauge welding cable and quick connects. Pictures and info are here: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115114

if you are gonna rely on a winch to save your ass, go big or go home, get a Warn 16.5 thermometric, or a 12K mile marker, i have alot of experience with the milemarker and im here to attest to its power, i winched 6 vehicles one right after the other out of 3 foot deep mud and she never once made me doubt it....its a beast....

ok so i should go with a winch that can pull at least 12k straight line and then get a snatch block to double the pulling ability now my other ? would be where is the cheapest place to buy ive seen so many diffrent prices.

National Tire and Wheel has great prices, and are ALOT better than 4 Wheel Parts.....you either need a straight 16K or get a 12K and put a snatch block on it

If your not going to use it alot check out Harbor Freight. They sell "MileMarker" winches unser the name Chicago Electric. They are SLOW but they work. I got mine 10K for my samurai for $239.00. Do a search on yahoo for "harbour freight discount coupon" There is a 20% off that I used. I wanted to get a 8K but there was a 10K packed inside. It was my lucky day

Try Summit Racing (summitracing.com) They sell all the brands, and their prices are good on them all. I believe they have a free shipping deal on their web orders.

For snatch blocks, try AW Direct (awdirect.com) I buy all of our towing equipment from them. You can get them with shackle attachments, large hooks, or chains. Get at least a 4 ton unit, which costs $60.99 with the hook on it. Thats what we use on our wreckers.

warn 16.5, best you can buy. I wouldn't trust anything else. Price reflects the quality. Warn also does make a 15K. Wouldn't go any smaller than that for these trucks.

Really? My truck weighs 7,000 lbs. Single line pull on my winch is 12,000 lbs. Double line pull is 24,000 - over 3 times the weight of the truck.

So why would you say you wouldn't go under 15,000? Do you know something I don't or are you just stating a personal preference based on who knows what?

If you really want the best winch for maximum use, hydraulic would be the way to go - use it all day long without over heating.

IMO if you can afford the 16.5 Warn go for it. but it is a bit of overkill. Many guys --my self included ahave been pulling full size, big blocks, covered with 1500# of mud out of 3'+ deep holes long before Warn came up with a 16.5. MY all time favorite is the 8274 Warn 8,000#. I run that up front. I run a lo pro Warn MX 8000 on the rear. I have had to pull truck with 9,500# enclosed trailer up a 200' plus hill so it will take abuse since that was multiple pulls. Remember the single line rating is the equivilant of a dead vertical lift anything less is well--less! So that winch may never see 8,000# of load especially with a sntch block. And unless the truck doesn't run, even a stuck truck slowly turning it's tires takes a huge load off the winch. What you should really ask yourself is if you are going to spend the bucks for a winch are you willing to do it right and upgrade the alternator so the winch doesn't cook from undervoltage!? Also don't forget you may need the snatch block to use up some cable for short pulls to prevent cable damage even if it is only 20' of pull! Also you were looking for a winch to put in a reciever. A 16.5 if you can muscle it out and into a hitch will tear it clean off the truck and not whimper doing it if your relly stuck. My experience with reciever mount winch setups has been that they are only good for a straight pull. Any side load and you will bend or tear the truck hitch.

Have fun shopping!

you should use a winch that is able to pull the weight of the vehicle plus half that weight so, if your truck is 7K then then you need a winch that is rated for 10,500k. Now I know these trucks weigh more than that plus all the goodies you add on people and so on. You can run a smaller winch but the cable is shorter and isn't rated for pulling these trucks. When you talk about a 8274 it's like comparing apples and oranges. The 8274 warn is the best winch to produced. Straight line pull on that winch is actually 12k. I can get into some history on that winch but nobody wants to hear. Anyway when it comes down to it, Go big or stay home!!!! Plus warranty issues arise when you tell them what the vehicle is.

We have 9000# hyd. winches on our wreckers, and they can pull about anything I've ever hooked up to. The key is using snatch blocks, they will double your pulling power. ;)

The next key is bracing your truck in place, with some nice wheel chocks, or chain/strap the front of your truck to a nearby tree.

On the front of my LSSV I have an 8,000# Warn. It also hooks into the back of my Freightliner single axle. I winched a 14,000# stalled WWII US Army Half Track up onto my 25' equipment trailer on a single line pull, with no problems. The wiring is the quick-disconnect plug with direct battery connection. My set up came from Northern Tool.
For mud or snow pulls I would want a larger winch, as others have suggested.

so where else do you guys recommend mounting a winch besides the back hitch and also does anyone know if you could mount a winch on a frontier bumper replacement. if not it looks like it has the grill guard attached to the bumper so the hooks still look accessible to mount a front hitch if i need to

The front hitch is where my winch is mounted. Look in my garage.

I have a warn powerplant HD on a Trans4mer mount on my truck. Its a 12K winch and 5cfm@90psi air compressor, handy rig to say the least.
