: mileage
corona 12-26-2004, 10:08 PM Hey gang, this is my first diesel, so be nice :). I know there's about 16246 threads on mileage, but I wanted advice.
I've got 13k on her,
she's had 4 dino oil changes, changed now to royal purple synthetic,
new air filter (FRAM - all I could find :(),
tires rotated,
change the pumpkin juice at 1k with mobil 1 synthetic,
new dealer bought (self installed) fuel filter,
good fuel, been using power service diesel trea from wally world since 6k,
almost always running aound empty (barely ever tow),
keep the juice on 2 or 3 (never higher),
And I can't get the freeway mileage to get above 16. In fact, recently, it's been dropping .
So, does the cooler weather, or change in winter fuel additives from the stations cost us a little in mileage in the winter?
I was hoping to see the mileage creep up after about 10k miles, but I'm not seeing it. Any suggestions?
Trevor @ TSP 12-26-2004, 10:33 PM Is your truck a 2WD or 4WD? I just traded off my LB7 2500 HD 2WD, and it would average 21-21.5 MPG with all highway driving. With a 50/50 mix, I'd average 16-16.5 MPG. If you're getting 16 MPG with 100% freeway driving, then I'd be a little disappointed, too. I'm only seeing 14.2-14.4 MPG from my '05, but I attribute that to the added weight of the 3500 dually. FYI, I did not see a big difference in mileage from the winter to summer. It was pretty consistent year-round. If you haven't changed the fuel filter you may give it a try.

TrevorIt's a 2WD, and I just replaced the fuel filter at 12.5k miles. About two tanks ago.
RickDLance 12-26-2004, 10:55 PM Try running the Juice on zero. We have the best MT mileage there. Towing heavy then turn it up to 1 or 2 max.

):h try temps -10*F or less and you'll see that mileage is definitely affected. Also, I bet the fuel isn't blended as aggressively in TX as it is in the northern states. Definitely less power here... I felt a difference in power and mileage once it got real cold here a few weeks ago. Went from average around 18.5mpg @ 65-70mph to only 15.5-16mpg. I also use PS additive and notice that fuel economy drops off even further if I don't put it in every at fill-up.
Corona, maybe you could try Stanadyne for a couple of tanks and see if there's any difference. I plan on giving it a try just as soon as I can get my hands on some.

I'll try that. Anyone know of any retailers here in South Texas? I'd prefer not to mail order in small quantities.
briano 12-26-2004, 11:32 PM Yes..I checked Stanadynes home page and found a dealer here in Austin.. here is the link and it shows 2 in the San Antonio area.. I just ordered a case instead of driving all over.

Bill Gisse 12-27-2004, 09:02 AM I live in San Antonio an don't have any trouble finding oil filters. Advance has Mobil One's, Orielly has Wix, NAPA has NAPA Gold, CarQuest has thier brand made by Wix. I also get Baldwin's way out Rigsby (Not to far from 1604 on left side) at a Filter/oil shop out there. You might want to find a shop that carries Baldwins as thier air filters are very good to.If you walk into one of these stores and they don't have your filter in stock, have them order one. I recommend Mobil One's, they are expensive but if you can afford the Purple stuff, you can afford good filters.
Would take that Fram out as soon as possible.I used them years ago when they were under different owners and quality was better. Don't know about the more expensive line of Fram's but still wouldn't iuse them.
Give me a call if you want to talk, I'm listed under Wilson Gisse, Windyhill Dr ( west side by Lackland AFB ).
I'm not a young guy and don't hang out but do like to talk to guy's abut thier Diuamax'es.
I get about 16 driving around town and 19-21 on trips. Mileage drops off a little when it gets cold.Try to find a Shell station or others that carry premium, Shamrock diesel doesn't do very good in my truck.
skoryaro2 12-27-2004, 09:17 AM I get 17 MPG consistantly in mixed driving (75 MPH on the freeway portion) since new. Now have 5000 miles. Since cold weather set in I lost about 1 MPG (down to 16). I use Stanadyne at every fill-up. Just ran out of it - next fill-up I'm going to start using Power Service. If MPG's are the same. I'll be staying with that. Costs much less.
Kennedy 12-27-2004, 10:07 AM I've been knocking down just shy of 19mpg with mine even on winter fuel. Sunday's trip was 265 miles at speeds around 62mph. DIC said that I used 14.2 gallons and got 18.6mpg. Filled same way that I did on the way out, and took 14 gallons. Hand calc showed 18.9mpg.
This was with FPPF Total Power treating my tank, and on a 15% #1 with 85% #2 "winterized diesel" blend as posted on the pump by my supplier.
The mods include: Juice/*** (not functioning, but installed and set on 5-5) and KD 4-5" exhaust along with a Uni foam air filter element. Truck runs pretty good for essentially stock...
Trip to Indy was mostly at 72, and DIC showed 26.5mpg but hand calculated to 18.8. Return trip was 17.5. This was with Predator 85HP tune installed.
Had the Juice been functioning, I'm sure the DIC would have been way off also...

Bill, thanks for the info. It was actually the FRAM Air Filter I installed. Nobody aftermarket local carried an AC/Delco, and FRAM was at least a brand I'd heard of. I don't know what the oil change shop uses for oil filters, it was one of those shell oil change shops.
corona 12-27-2004, 10:59 PM Well, I picked up some standadyne, filled up with Shell premium diesel. We'll know in a few days if this helps. Thanks for the notes all.
TCosgrove 12-28-2004, 10:54 AM I was averaging 17 to 18 mpg combined hwy and city driving. Then it started to drop to 15 mpg. I changed the oil and the fuel filter. Filled up and the dic said I was at around 17 mpg but now Im back to 15 mpg. It's a 2004 HD EC 4x4 SB with 25000 on it. The only mods are 265 tires just put ion with only 200 miles on em. I'm gonna take it to the dealer next week for a reflash and see wht happens. Sure hope its not a injector-:t

corona 01-05-2005, 11:21 AM Almost done with this first tank on Standadyne. Looks like mileage is up - but this is only one tank, so it might be a fluke.
fishingn 01-05-2005, 01:00 PM My mileage stinks as well with the 2005. I have a 2wd with 8500 miles & the best ive gotten in the city is about 15.0-15.5. Highway driving iam only getting a tad bit better than city driving. I do have the juice/attitude & usually run it on level 3 and iam not doing any WOT runs either. Iam thinking about going to synthetic oil on my next change out, either amsoil or mobil 1 truck/suv. (if i can find any at wallyworld seems like they never have any on the shelf lately.)
JDTRIP 01-05-2005, 01:34 PM 04-3500 dually 4x4 LB7, 54,000 mi. juice level 3 mostly 17mpg consistently.
aegis 01-05-2005, 01:59 PM I suppose this might be a dumb question but what is premium diesel fuel?? All I have ever seen is #2.
2Blue 01-05-2005, 02:24 PM Just pulled a 550 mile round trip over New Years in pouring rain. Average speed was 65-70+ and my mileage was 19.2 combined with no load besides wife and overnigh essentials.
Just had 1st oil change after this trip with 5400 miles on it and will monitor mpg again.
subman 01-06-2005, 12:00 AM Just got back from a trip to Texas... almost 3000 miles.... speed was anywhere from 70-85.... total trip mileage was 17.1 the outside temp varied fron 4-72....noticed as i got closer to home ND the mileage was dropping off... around 15... but i was still driving 75 and we were bucking a 20-30 mph northwest wind.... I thought I should see a little better mileage but it is winter, windy and I have a lead foot...it will take awhile to get back to driving the speed limit... I like the Texas idea of speed limits... they are only suggestions... south of dallas on I-45 speed limit is 60 and everyone was doing 80... have a great day...
travellerw 01-07-2005, 12:56 PM My mileage has been absolutely horrible... Currently my average is 14 MPG. This is with one very short 5 min highway drive and the rest heavy city driving.. Although with that being said I'm getting crap mileage while towing as well.. This summer I was averaging 10 while towing my 32 foot..
I have been back to the dealer twice and have all the latest software put on. They are telling me that is all they can do.. Other than crappy mileage the truck is perfect.. Runs excellent.. Smooth and loads of power, even with winter diesel...
Thanks

21 - 23 hwy Juice on Level 2. In town 17-19 Juice on Level 2. Towing 15k toy hauler around 12 depending on terrain. 24,000 miles
03 2500 HD D/A CC/SB LT White Juiced
Just recently hand calc @ 11 MPG with mostly short trip city driving. Temps have been in the teens and have been running winterized fuel for about a month. No additives. Since I usually take short trips, I have both front covers on so it will heat up quicker. Over the summer pulling a 8000# fiver mileage was around 9-10 MPG.
Mods include 265/75/16 Revos, Nicktane pre filter and 50 Gal super tank.
Trucks in today for surging and strong fuel smell. Hopefully not injectors and a reflash will help MPG.
