: Starter Stuck On
GreenDuramax04 12-26-2004, 02:59 PM I just got home from a quick trip to CVS and after I turned the truck off I heard a noise under the hood. After opening the hood I determined that the starter was stuck on. Turning the ignition key on and off did not help it so I quickly disconnected my batteries. I smell a burning smell which is probably the wire since its not ment to have a load on it that long.
What should I do now? Rap on the stater with a hammer then reconnect the battery? Or should I just have the dealer pick it up since it only has 25K miles? The only problem is I have the Edge and H2s on it.
Horse Trainer 12-26-2004, 03:14 PM Ditch the Edge and call a dealer - might be more to this than meets the eye.
hdpoul 12-26-2004, 03:14 PM Remove the edge call the dealer Don't worry about wheels
GreenDuramax04 12-26-2004, 03:21 PM Just hit it with a hammer and that didn't work. Guess I'll have to take off the Edge.
Has anyone run into problems with the H2 wheels at the dealer? A friend of mine talked to his dealer about a leaking axle seal and they said if he brings it in with H2s they will void the warranty.
I have a little pull with my dealer. I buy many new vans and trucks from them. So I don't think that they will even try anything like that with me.
GMC-2002-Dmax 12-26-2004, 04:45 PM Do you have a remote starter ??????
If so you will be out of luck unless it was dealer installed.........
Also the H2's..........if they try any crap ask them what wheels have to do with the starting the truck....??? Totally a non-related issue......
Let us know what happens
Searay90 12-26-2004, 06:16 PM Are you absolutely sure it's the starter? Reason I ask is the the ABS unit went out on my wifes 2001 Yukon XL, and the specific failure mode that it went into is that the electric motor that powers the ABS unit (under the truck mounted to the frame) stuck in the "on" position. It went out during our 5 hr drive from North Dallas to Galveston so I don't know how long the ABS motor was running, but it was smoking hot when we finally reached my mom's house. Turning off the key did nothing.......... it kept running and running (and had a burnt smell to it). I burned my hand on the unit trying to pull the electrical harness off to shut it down. Then I opened the hood and found the fuse for the ABS and pulled it out. The ABS motor then shut down. Took it to the dealership the next day (have a 100K GMPP warranty) and they had to replace the entire unit. The told me that the part alone cost over $1000 and the failure we had is very common. He said that most people don't even notice it and it just keeps running until the battery is completely run down.
Anyway........ it seems if the starter was running it would be engaged to the flywheel and trying to spin your motor over. You might want to check out the ABS unit under your truck.
Best of luck.
GreenDuramax04 12-26-2004, 07:03 PM I'm pretty sure its the starter. The truck won't start. The starter just keeps turning. Its a real big load too because when I try and reconnet the battery its sparks a whole lot.
Yea, I thought the starter would engage the flywheel too but its not for some reason. Maybe on my drive home it ripped the gears off??
Searay90 12-27-2004, 12:20 PM I'm pretty sure its the starter. The truck won't start. The starter just keeps turning. Its a real big load too because when I try and reconnet the battery its sparks a whole lot.The fuse for the ABS unit is one of those red 50 AMP fuses........... That will cause one heck of a spark when you try to reconnect the battery too (that is if the ABS Unit has failed as described above)
Yea, I thought the starter would engage the flywheel too but its not for some reason. Maybe on my drive home it ripped the gears off??If it is the starter, then the pinion gear on the starter itself is probably toast, and the ring gear on the flex plate will also have some damage on it.
Keep us posted
GreenDuramax04 12-27-2004, 04:00 PM I would think that if the ABS was out I'd get an ABS light on the dash. I was under the truck and I'm pretty sure it was the starter making the noise. Plus the truck would not start with the ignition key.
They towed to the dealer this morning but the diesel tech was off today. I should know something tomorrow.

Searay90 12-27-2004, 04:13 PM That's the wierd thing about the ABS unit going out on the wifes Yukon XL, we never got any indicator on the dash saying that the ABS unit was having a problem. I only noticed it when we got out of the truck (with the engine off) and heard the electric motor running under the truck. Nothing on the DIC, or SES illumulated on the dash. The tech said I did the right thing by pulling the fuse and that by doing that it would not effect braking on the truck at all. So if the unit goes out again after the GMPP 100K warranty expires, then the truck will not have ABS brakes on it........ Not going to pay over $1,000 for the part  if it has an average lifespan of 40K miles (that's when it went out).
Now when I did pull the fuse and restarted the truck, I got an ABS malfunction indicator on the DIC...... go figure :(
Well hopefully you will find out something about your truck tomorrow.
maynard9089 12-28-2004, 09:08 PM I had an older truck do this and it ended up being the ignition switch.
GreenDuramax04 12-28-2004, 10:29 PM Truck did not get worked on today. Called the General Manager to have him check on it. Got a call back a few minutes later from the Service Manager who appoligized and said it will be fixed tomorrow. We'll see about that....
GreenDuramax04 12-30-2004, 07:06 PM All fixed now. It was the starter. They said the solenoid was stuck. They put on a new starter. I overheard them say that starter cost $650.00.
They did not mention anything about the H2 wheels, AFE intake, dual exhaust. Maybe I should have left the Edge on....??... I guess better safe than sorry.

Max Power 12-30-2004, 07:10 PM They sell quite a bit cheaper then that on Ebay.

_nar_ 12-30-2004, 08:00 PM Is the starter covered in the 100000 mile warranty or do they sneak out of that? I assume it should be just like the rest of the motor parts but you never know...
GreenDuramax04 12-30-2004, 11:03 PM I'm not sure if its covered under the 100k or not. My truck only has 25K on it so I guess it was covered on the 36k warranty.
I still don't know why it would fail so soon. Is this a common problem? I don't remember seeing many posts about it.
