: Flex plate R&R
ratlover 12-26-2004, 02:20 PM Need to remove and install a new flexplate on my 03 D/A
The bolts are reusable correct? Locktight right? What torque? There is a bolt on the balancer up front thats accesable to keep the motor from turning over right? Any other stuff I should keep in mind?
TIA:)
_nar_ 12-26-2004, 11:46 PM Ok I have to ask: Too much extreme power?
ratlover 12-27-2004, 10:44 AM Doubt it, people are running a whole lot more nuts than me no problems. converter spit out some bolts and sheared some others. chewed up the flexplate and the converter face pretty good. Duno why it spit em out? held fine for 10k. I had a ratteling noise that i thought was my exhaust laying on the crossmember(sounded just like it, had it laying on it once before) and since it was freaking cold and I was in no mood to wait to work on it in the street in front of my apartment I decided to wait till the weekend and a heated garage to fix. When one pops out its a rapid chain of destruction. Yes I'm a dumb ass. Learn from my mistakes. did I mention Censored!
_nar_ 12-27-2004, 03:54 PM Well that sucks... Which torque converter do you have?
ratlover 12-27-2004, 04:28 PM suncoast 3 disk.....well had, nothing now right now lol. The new one should be ariving from them today or tommarow. They have been great to deal with thus far considereing they coulda raped me if they wanted. Mike put me in contact with Joe and Tyler over there. Still am wondering WTF hapened and why one came lose after 10k of holding fine:confused:
_nar_ 12-27-2004, 05:04 PM So they will warranty it for you? Or are you just buying a new one? I thought the triple was super strong. I would suppose they want the old one so they can see why it failed? Hope you found someplace warm to tear the trans out...
ratlover 12-27-2004, 05:16 PM When it spit all the bolts out and sheared em it left FUBARed threads and parts of the bolts still in it. Also I am replacing the flexplate since the bolt holes are a bit wollered out. The converter clutches looked like new acording to Joe when he called me and talked to me after they cut it apart. They didnt "warantee" it persay but they didnt charge me the 1200$ or what ever the hell the cost of a 3 disk is so i am happy. Even though they coulda said pay up full price for a new converter. I woulda been SOL especially since they had my core and wanted my truck running ASAP, with the cost and time of shipping I was stuck with SC like it or not. They got the converter late one evening and Joe called me the next day mid morning with what they found. Like I said I and the guys at SC dont know exactly what happend instead of maybe just install error? I did the locktight and the whole 9 yards and it lasted for 10k:confused: Joe has taken much better care of me than he needed to. Well.......I guess i shouldnt say that since I havent gotten my converter yet, he may just send me a pic of it with a ransom note):h
_nar_ 12-27-2004, 05:22 PM Well that's good that they are taking care of you... That's pretty quick to tear it apart and everything. Hope you get it soon.. Or the pic of it anyway...
ratlover 12-28-2004, 09:34 AM and if anybody knows the size of the hex socket that I'm going to need to get her off I would appreciate it.
dmaxalliTech 12-28-2004, 09:43 AM your gonna need a 14mm allen socket, a piece of pipe and a hefty breaker bar. You will need to lock the engine somehow, the balancer bolt wont do it. Bolts should be replaced after removal.
ratlover 12-28-2004, 10:08 AM Thanks :)
How do I keep the motor from spinning? Off is no biggy, I have a impact. on is another matter. What torque?
socaldieseltech 12-31-2004, 08:02 PM I hope you have a kick@ss impact gun, because those suckers are TIGHT!!!
dmaxalliTech 01-01-2005, 05:42 PM my impact wont do the job
Max Payne 01-02-2005, 07:44 PM Two really fat people hanging off a 6 foot breaker bar will BARELY do the job.
dmaxalliTech 01-02-2005, 10:28 PM Two really fat people hanging off a 6 foot breaker bar will BARELY do the job. What are you trying to say):h
Max Payne 01-03-2005, 09:41 AM I'm trying to say I gained 20 pounds over the holidays, so now I can do flywheels by myself):h
socaldieseltech 01-03-2005, 10:44 AM Rotflmao
_nar_ 01-03-2005, 11:40 PM 20 made you the same as 2 really fat people? Man I hope it's mostly muscle...
ratlover 01-04-2005, 11:21 AM 3/4" impact wouldnt do it......although it was a crapsman. one skinny guy and a breaker and a cheater pipe holding onto the frame rail and pushing with his feet can get it off. it takes 1 really fat guy and one skinny guy and a whole lota cussing to get em torqued to spec.
_nar_ 01-04-2005, 04:32 PM That seems like it might be hard on a little 14mm socket...
ratlover 01-04-2005, 04:38 PM Its a 14 mil allen. bought a snapon socket for 22$ or so and didnt worry. Had to make a bracket to keep my motor from turning over too
_nar_ 01-04-2005, 05:40 PM What did you attach the bracket to?
socaldieseltech 01-04-2005, 09:29 PM I put my 3/4 on it with an adapter and it broke the adapter almost instantly, it was kinda funny. I think if you could get the allen out of the snap-on socket, and use a 3/4 drive 14mm socket, it might work. I hate using breaker bar with a cheater bar, but its the only way.
ratlover 01-07-2005, 04:37 PM I made a little peice outa steel and bolted it to one of the belhousing bolt holes. I think the GM man uses a tool that bolts into the starter? If your really interested I can get you a pick or if you really need it I can ship the lil booger to ya. It pretty hard to describe in words but its pretty simple........
Kinda funny how there are 8 of those bolts torqued that tight and there are only 6 much smaller bolts bolted to that thin peice of metal holting the converter in its place.
