: Duramax needs to be recalled and replaced by the Cat.
4x4hunter1 12-26-2004, 11:03 AM Duramax might be adequate in your 2500 or 3500 daily driver but it can't live up GM's claims as a commercial-type engine in their Medium Duty truck line.
We run 4500 Kodiaks and deliver power boats and yachts - all loads are below GM's listed GCWs.
After a 4 month battle, GM repurchased one of our units under the Texas Lemon Law. It wouldn't, couldn't run despite 4 different dealerships trying to make it run. Turbo, catalytic convertor, left cylinder head, injectors and numerous sensors, etc. replaced. Problems started at approx. 19,000 miles. What a piece of junk, costing us some $87,000 in lost business. The dealer we delivered this unit to, still has it in storage since 7/'04 waiting for GM to collect it.
The truck that replaced this one is now encountering similar problems. RPM drops to 2000, no power. It has 24,000 miles on the clock. It's broken down at the 10th dealership in a row, over some 2200 miles, in Englewood, CO. On this journey, truck was towed into Tucson, just before Thanksgiving, where they took a week to replace the turbo. (We believe this was not our problem). Good luck in finding any parts for your LLY at the dealers! It made it 60 miles from there to Benson and was towed in and delaer replaced the fuel filter. (even though fuel filter was replaced 1000 miles prior).
Then broke down in Albuq., NM where another fule filter was replaced. Driver insisted this fuel filter be cut open and fuel tanks checked for water or contamination. Filter absolutely clean and tests on tanks negative.
Driver limped in to Dallas (home base) and dealer took complete fuel delivery system apart as too high vacuum readings. After a week forund small cracked plastic fitting on fuel filter housing.
Truck went to Detroit. Electrical problems on the way. That took 3 dealers before was correctly fixed. After loading power boat in Detroit for San Diego - 2000 RPMs and no power. Dealer diagnosed bad catalytic convertor. 3 days to order and install (this is Detroit! Motor city! Not far from Flint! No dealers have any in stock!)
After encountering same problems en route, and 3 more dealers, scratching their asses (which also requires some sort of diagnostic code!) we're now down in CO still trying to get to Calif. and deliver a 7800 pound boat. No way will it make the grades through CO.
In our experience this engine is Isuzu junk and just doesn't cut it. If have to replace this unit we'll have to go up to a 6500 and get the Cat. Too bad GM doesn't offer the Cat in their smaller class trucks - then again many more complaints like ours, they just might have to.
Allen Schultz 12-26-2004, 11:18 AM It would be interesting to review the paper trail on these problems. Would you mind scanning the documents and making them available online? Definitely sorry to hear about your problems - makes it difficult to run a business profitably.
Max Power 12-26-2004, 11:25 AM Or post the serial # and someone will post the GM warranty info.
renagade 12-26-2004, 05:29 PM Vin numbers would be nice. Sounds like another Dealer that has some kid that just took a class on the Duramax doing work on it. Its a shame.. All the dealers around me are not good with the diesels. I think the dealers should be required to stock the parts for what they sell also at least the most replaced ones.
BROKER 12-26-2004, 05:45 PM I'm gettin' the flame suit on as I type ,but I'm not buyin' it. VIN ......I'll do my own research, thank you.
Mike L. 12-26-2004, 07:41 PM Troll
Fitter48093 12-26-2004, 08:13 PM Well if he's a troll, How do you explain the POS I own? It's about to go back under Michigan Lemon Law And I would be more than happy to post any info you may want once the case is completed!!!
sdaver 12-26-2004, 08:20 PM I'm gettin' the flame suit on as I type ,but I'm not buyin' it. VIN ......I'll do my own research, thank you.
where ya been buddie?
Frank Blum 12-26-2004, 08:27 PM We now have over 10K members. There are bound to be a few problem trucks but when they run good for several thousand miles and they have a bunch of unrepairable problems. Makes me wonder? Later! Frank
Only one troll on this thread and it ain't the guy that started it.
TheBac 12-26-2004, 09:25 PM I usually only skim the LLY forums, but hasn't this happened to other people before? IIRC I've read another LLY thread where they didn't have power above 2000 rpm, and other symptoms similar to this. I just can't find where it was.
It also sounds like he was victim of inexperienced service depts....
Tom
BTW, whats a "troll"?
4x4hunter1 12-27-2004, 12:14 AM Here's the vin# 1GBE4E12X4F512525 2004 Chevy C4500 Duramax/Allison
Run the RO's for yourself. Pay particular attention to the dates and number of dealerships.
And this is not an isolated unit. It's the second piece of junk, in a row. Lose the $$ we are economically, and see if you don't start *****ing.
If anyone cares to check on the first lemon that GM repurchased, let me know and I'll be happy to supply that vin# too.
SpoolinTurbo 12-27-2004, 12:22 AM The only reason He's being called a troll is because this is a cross posted exact replica of a thread he started in the medium duty area.
I may not contribute too much to the board, but at least I'm not a bandwidth thief.
4x4hunter1 12-27-2004, 12:27 AM And what's wrong with posting on both boards?
It is a medium-duty c4500 Kodiak
and
It has a Duramax 6.6 LLY
Why miss getting some useful answers from a tech. that just might read only one of the boards?
dirty old man 12-27-2004, 12:34 AM Are you the same man who had a truck down in northern CA back in the summer?
4x4hunter1 12-27-2004, 12:51 AM Hey, Dirty Old Man!
Yup, that be me, The Coalinga, California kid. After a month and a half, they claimed the truck was fixed. Went to Calif. and got it. It drove a magnificent 123 miles and croaked again. I paid some $5300 to have it towed back to Dallas. (GM reimbursed me for this as part of the repurchase settlement.)
That truck was repurchased by GM, after a 4 month battle. Giving the General the benefit of the doubt, replaced it with a 4500 Kodiak - shame on me.
The trucks are OK, the Duramax can't do the job. Wish I had a crystal ball and had gone with the Cat in the 6500.
I just wish someone could get a handle on fixing the bloody thing where we can get at least one trouble free delivery out of it!
Spending a fortune on driver motel rooms and meals not to mention trying to soothe unhappy customers.
It's one thing to complain if it's Duramax daily driver, but it becomes an ugly issue if one can't depend on it to make a living.
Glad we have Cats. and DT466s in other units.
We run boats out of florida to all parts of the country with a 3500 dually with a few minor problems but other than that we've had good luck with it.
socaldieseltech 12-27-2004, 10:57 AM IF you let 1 truck cost you that much money shame on you. Why put all your chips in 1 basket? You couldn't have rented or used one of your other trucks to make do? I personally wouldn't have let this situation get this cr@ppy in the first place, I would have crawled so far up the general's A, he would be happy to replace my truck. I work on alot of medium duty trucks , none of my customers are unhappy with their trucks. Unfortunately, you have an isolated incident.
4x4hunter1 12-27-2004, 11:10 AM We only use our 3500 Duramax Silverados for bumper pulls. They can't handle our transporters plus a loaded yacht or powerboat. The previous truck that croaked was a 3500, with every factory option, except a satellite radio.
We run coast-to-coast, all 48 contiguous states, plus some 7 provinces in Canada.
We're fanatics about PMs and do them before the GM schedule.
We run Mobil 1 and have for many years.
We add low-pour-point depressants/fuel treatments to the fuel and buy only at the "name brand" locations.
Making our boat delivery and keeping a satisfied client is our bread and butter and we baby our equipment and have gotten many miles of trouble-free use from our Cats., DT466s and Cummins powered units.
It's just unacceptable and too much of a coincidence that we're experiencing these problems with our Duramaxs, not to mention the dealer network, in the U.S. NOT having replacement parts for the LLY. That's parts distribution 101. Every piece of needed hardware has to be ordered in, mostly coming in from Woodstock, Canada where the LLY is produced.
For our application, the Duramax just can't cut the mustard. Plain and simple.
This Kodiak is still down in Colorado and has been since before the Christmas weekend. It's at the 9th dealership in a row, all attempting to fix our problems, all within some 2400 miles. This has to be some kind of record!? The engine drops to 2000 RPM and won't pull. Driver has been in some dangerous situations in trying to get to the side of the highway, whenever this occurs.
Some posting here are in disbelief. Want to put on their flame proofing. I won't allow my word to be impugned. Here's the vin# 1GBE4E12X4F512525 - 2004 C4500 Kodiak for the guys that want to pull it's history. Feel free to post your findings as I'd like to see them, too.
In case all the RO's haven't been entered, here's the "paper trail":
11/23/04 Towed into Watson Chevrolet, Tucson, AZ - released 11/30/04 They changed the turbo. (We think unnecessarily) Had to order it in. Advised had been throwing a P2563 code
11/30/04 Towed into Beaudry Chevrolet, Benson, AZ (some 60 miles later) - released 12/1/04 They changed the fuel filter (Even though it was changed 1000 miles prior) They advised throwing a "restricted fuel flow code." No number given.
12/1/04 Towed into Trucks West of New Mexico, Albuq., NM. - released 12/2/04 They changed the fuel filter, yet again (installed the wrong one) Driver insisted that old filter be cut open and fuel tanks checked for water and/or contaminated fuel. Filter clean and tanks checked OK. Advised had been throwing a "restricted fuel filter code."
12/2/04 Broke down several more times. Driver refused to have more dealers look at it and limped back to home base, Dallas, TX
12/4/04 Taken to Hayes GMC Truck Group, Dallas, TX. Released 12/10/04.
They kept getting high vacuum reading during driving tests. Completely took apart and tested fuel delivery system, including 120 gallon aux. tank. Found crack in small plastic fitting in fuel filter housing. As would have taken over a week to order in from GM parts, they took needed part from new truck. They advised only code throwing was a P1093
12/13/04 Into Greenlee GMC, Indianapolis, IN. Electrical problems. Released 12/13/94
12/15/04 Towed into Red Holman Chevrolet, Ann Arbor, MI - Back to original problem, 2000 RPM, no power and same electrical problem. They diagnosed bad catalytic converter. Had to order one in. Couldn't locate electrical problem. Released truck 12/17/04
12/17/04 Stopped at Christianson Chevrolet, Highland, IN as electrical problem still occuring. They located two chaffed wires under dash above doghouse and repaired. As doghouse was removed at other dealerships must have caused wires to chafe at some point. Electrical problem fixed. Released 12/17/04
As running under over-size load permits driver had to shut down for weekend.
12/21/04 Engine back to 2000 rpm and no power in Colorado. No way to pull the grades. Towed back to Golden, CO. to Stevinson Chevrolet. These clowns claim that problem is 3/8" fuel feed line from aux. tank to blame. Too small has to be 1/2". Hmmm, wonder why same problem when on stock 25 gal. tank? Plus, when we further investigate, all our other trucks have same size fuel feed setup for their aux. tanks. Checked with several aftermarket aux. tank and custom installers. Never had a problem with 3/8". Some techs. advise that 3/8" is the stock factory size on GM med duty trucks. What's going on here? Dealer disconnects our 120 gal. aux. tank and expects us to run on the measly 25 gal. stock tank. Final straw - next morning, truck starts and stalls. Dealer can't restart after some 4 hours. They didn't realize that when they disconnected the aux. tank they left the selector switch reading the fuel gauge level for this almost full tank. They had run some 150 miles on the almost empty stock gallon tank and drained it dry. Some dealership and some "techs." Demanded GM roadside assistance tow truck from these clowns to another dealership.
Truck now at Burt Chevrolet, Englewood, CO. Got there too late to be worked on before the holiday. These techs seem to be more knowledgable. We'll see. I'm out of patience.
To get GM's attention, as complaining just won't get it done - contact the BBB Auto Line and request their complaint package. They'll ask several screening questions to see if the claim is valid. Before you receive the BBB package via snail mail a GM "supervisor" will be calling you...guaranteed!
4x4hunter1 12-27-2004, 11:17 AM Can't rent trucks for our business. Takes a specialized set up.
Just how does one avoid shelling out the $$$ when the truck won't run? You got a magic wand? Then wave it over me, brother!
After this happenig on a previous truck, we've become very familiar with dealing with GM. They can't offer an instant fix. It's a stalling game as they hope that one of the dealerships can fix the truck.
We're filing against them via the BBB Auto Line. You got any other realistic solutions other than "crawling up the General's ass?"
miniwally 12-27-2004, 02:38 PM Well at least you got them to take your truck to a burt shop. I have not heard bad things about burt. I just bought my 05 25ooHD from them in Nov. and was way more than impressed with them. I think that one of the higher up service guys down the street at burt GM has done a bunch of after market work on his own duramax.
By the way all of this still sounds like there has to be something more wrong than this. I understand bad vehicles get made and bought but this sounds a little to much for my liking.

I hate when people cry bloody murder when they get a lemon....then they all must be junk. Man I should start a list of cummins that made an early exit to the srap metal heap.Just yesterday my buddies 3rd gen. cummins hot shot lost its motor at 60,000...already had the tranny done twice. Also its beyond rational thinking to me why people who have a volume hauling business don't buy over the road tractors.....thats the real solution to the problem really.
socaldieseltech 12-27-2004, 06:05 PM I don't see 9 complaints in 2600 miles. I only see 2 possible driveability complaints.
dpower 12-27-2004, 06:07 PM Besides the turbo...what are the other major issues....am I missing something?
dpower 12-27-2004, 06:08 PM Exactly socaldiesel. I guess I am not seeing triple then.

Also its beyond rational thinking to me why people who have a volume hauling business don't buy over the road tractors.....thats the real solution to the problem really.
An over the road truck would be the way to go but, it is also more costly. I'm curious as to how much weight your pulling with these trucks?
renagade 12-27-2004, 06:42 PM Don't look too bad to me ., My truck has a larger warranty report than that, and I am happy with it. I run a business I depend on vehicles with also. Construction based. I ALWAYS have a backup vehicle. Whatever I do, I make sure there is another rig ready to go when one breaks down. Its business sense to me, and a write off.
Stelth450 12-27-2004, 10:14 PM I agree with what the last few posts have said....if you don't like the truck then get another brand don't bash the duramax for being an isuzu. Maybe your not aware of it, but isuzu is alot bigger in diesel technology than cat is. So don't think that if GM would have put a cat motor in it all would be well. Oh and I am not trying to start something here....I think cat makes some very good diesel motors for their particular applications. But I also think GM and Isuzu did a wonderful job with the Duramax. Hell if they hadn't done this and GM still had their (uhgggg) 6.2 or (not too bad but not great) 6.5 Turbo then honestly most of the people in this forum wouldn't be here....they would still be driving a Ford or a Dodge. GM has definately made a potent combination with the Duramax and Allison and have made a serious dent in market share because of it.
Mylash 12-27-2004, 10:31 PM I bought a Freightliner FL120, Condo, with 400hp Detroit in it, for $38,000... I put another 375,000 on it, with only $2500 worth of repairs, and sold it two years later, for $21,000, with 850,000 miles on it. Such pricing is still available, so the tractors are not too expensive.. However, running it commercially is - permits, tax fuel, and other considerations make it viable only for people needing such power to haul the cargo.
Last week I was looking at a Pete, with 600,000 miles on it, for $32k.. it will run happily for another 400,000 miles, at least. Any heavy duty truck sales lot has such tractors, at those prices.

chtucker 12-28-2004, 12:27 AM All I can say is I now have a GMC 5500 because my Ford was towed 12 times in three years. It happens with everything. I think you will have better luck with BURT chevy, but I think that you should take it to a TRUE medium duty dealer. Transwest GMC is not that far away from BURT.
I can help you out and run whatever you have out to California also. I have a gooseneck/5th wheel/bumper capable truck...
Let me know if I can help.
