: Is my engine block heater bad?

I have plugged my truck in about 3 times in the last week and I hear no crackling/popping noise like I normally do and the truck is obviously cold the next morning. It's not tripping any breakers in my house either. This is the only problem I have had out of my 2005. Can anyone help?:help::banghead:

Possibility...

Unless you have the "Updated" GM Plug in. Kills power untill 0 Degrees IIRC..

I doubt you hace that cord in an 05. Does the glow plug light still light at atart up and how long does it stay on if so. On my 06 and my 01 the temp guage was about 180 at start up and then cools off as the coolant starts moving through the block. If this is what is happening it is normal

I didn't know about any updates.... The glow plug light stays on as if the truck was not plugged in at all. The temp gauge is not showing that it is warm. I plugged it in a lot last year and never had any problems.

Sounds like your block heater is on hiatus. Quick and dirty way to find out... Use an ohmmeter across the two plug terminals. It should essentially read 0 ohms or something close to it. If it's infinite, then the heater and or cord is bad.

I made my appointment today with the dealer. Thanks everyone for your help.

There should be about 15 ohms resistance across the coils in the heater. 0 ohms would be a short and trip the breaker. My block heater was just replaced due to coolant leaking from the heater itself. It ruined the cord and the dealer replaced all under warrenty even though it has 40k on the truck. They did not put the t-stat style cord on it.

My cord had a short. I unplugged the cord and found one side to be dead. Luckily the end with the AC pug was bad. I just spliced in a new cord.

Mine's an '03. I'd like to see paper on the updated cord. I can't believe anyone would waste their time putting an outside temp sensor on a block heater.

Indeed it was a bad plug cord for the engine block heater. New one is on, and it's all good. Thanks for everyone's help.
