: Front end noise?

I have 17500km on my truck and I've just started to notice this humming type noise coming from the front end.

At first I thought it might be my "MT tires" because they are somewhat loud, but tires have a continuous sound while driving, this sound is intermittent with every revolution, hum hum hum hum etc.. It's mostly noticeable between 25 kmph and 40 kmph.

I can hear it in 2wd, 4wd, and in "N" while just coasting. I can only here it from inside the cab, I tried listening for it with the windows down while coasting, but I couldn't notice anything.

I just put my lift on 3000km ago, and everything was nice and tight then, hubs, bearings, etc.

I checked my front differential oil, it was full and like new.

Is it possible for a tire to make more noise at one specific point during it's revolution? (I hope it's only that)

Thanks,
Blair

i have been searching the posts. you are experiencing the same thing i am right now. it sucks. i had the same problem 6 months ago. it was a wheel bearing. have you checked yours out? jack up the front and try to move your wheel back and forth from the 12 and 6 oclock position. it shouldn't move. i just replaced the bearing again thinking that it was bad again but i still have the noise. so im kinda stuck. found this thread going

Im also experiencing something similar, but mine only happens when going above 55 mph. Sound is coming more from driver front and is a vibration that lead me to believe was new tires (bfg at ko 285/70/17 on h2) had driver front rebalanced and still makes sound. I cranked t bars up 4 turns to fit bigger tires and haven't had an alignment yet about 3 weeks since done that. Could that be the problem? It may be time to take it in. Do you think dealer will hassle me about having 285/70/17 tires on? thanks

You should always have an alignment done after cranking up your t-bars.
As for your dealer giving you a hassle about having 285's, it's probably a 50/50 chance that they will. Usually if it's a drivetrain issue, they won't touch your vehicle until you've installed OEM size tires.

It sucks when you don’t' know what the problem is! You have to let the stealer find it for you, and not to mention, charge you up the A$$.

How many miles/km did you have before having to replace your wheel bearing?
I haven't checked for any play in the hub since I installed my lift, it was tight after I installed the lift, and I've only put about 3000km on the truck since. Do you think the bearing could have worn out in just a few thousand Kilometres?

Also, what are the chances of the dealer denying hub/bearing warranty because of my lift?

Was just thinking on asking the same question. Comes from the front. Can't hear with the window down. Loudest 40-50 mph. You start to hear it about 25 mph. Bearings seem to be
OK. Changed tires which made no difference.

i don't think it would have gone out just from a few thousand km. if there isn't any play then you are probably ok. i just made that mistake. replaced a bearing when i didn't have too. there wasn't any movement but it sounded the same as before so i replaced it. the 1st time my bearing went out i think i was around 70k miles. im at 98k now. i did the work myself because i needed it done right away. only takes a couple of hours slacking. the dealer replaced my outer axle seal on the axle houseing under warantee. it was an extended warantee though. the stealer treated with a don't ask don't tell policy. they said if the warantee company asked if the truck had a lift then they would have to tell them, but they weren't going to come right and say oh yeah by the way... this truck is lifted. which worked great for me. some people say if its a factory warantee and the dealer gives you crap about the lift then take it to another dealer. there is that law that states they have to prove that the lift caused the part failure but at the same time that cost money in court if you have to fight them on it. and they have the right to refuse service... so it sucks either way. you just need to find a good dealer.

Like you say, it depends on the dealer!

It just sucks when you don't know what the problem is, you hear the sound while you drive knowing that it could be the sound of something wearing out  or it's just something very minor, and it sounds worse than it actually is.
I hate it, so I crank up the stereo and pretend it's not there.

I remember after assembling my Rotors/Callipers I noticed as I spun one of the Rotors, the brake pad made surface contact with the Rotor, and there was more turning resistance on one half of the Rotor than the other half. (Slight warping in the Rotor?) I never heard any noise at first, but maybe now there's more surface contact? I'll have to check into it.
I'll keep you all posted if I find out what the problem is.

I've got a similar sound/vibration/hum at 55-65mph, usually right about 62mph at its worst. I've been reading more on drivelines and continuous running angles. It seems that these types of vibrations are indicators of
'torsional excitation' or 'inertia excitation' of the driveline/u-joints due to excessive continuous running angles. Heron posted about a similar problem that his dealer finally fixed by shimming his carrier bearing to reduce these angles. Here is a link to a good(I think) driveline information page: http://www.drivelinesnw.com/troubleshooting_symptom.html . Mine is definitely affected by weight and load, and seems to be worse when I've got my tools loaded and/or pulling my trailer.
