: SPA guages
Slick 12-23-2004, 10:49 AM I would like some feedback on these dual gauges. I know hoot had them in his GMC. Does anyone know what the EGT limit is on these gauges. I think they can be programmed to activate switches. I was wondering if you could wire the boost or EGT gauge to activate your NOS system at a certain setting. This may be the wrong forum, but I figured I would get more feedback here rather than the accessory forum.
Fingers 12-23-2004, 11:21 AM Didn't know they had programmable outputs. Hmmmmm, where's that credit card....
Slick 12-23-2004, 11:24 AM Yeah I think they are kinda cool too. They also have built in warning lights when you hit a pre-set EGT limit or boost pressure. Does anyone thank there would be an advantage to useing a switch this way other than the cool factor?

I'm happy with my Boost/EGT combo.
My post intercooler air temp/fuel pressure gauge seems to hunt around alot on the fuel pressure side, I'm going to experiment around with additional grounding. I'll break out the instruction book later and get back to you on the programmable outputs, but I'm pretty sure it is available.
Slick 12-23-2004, 01:06 PM Not to hi-jack my own thread):h but what is the highest EGT you have seen on your gauge Trippin? That is one of the reasons I was interested in these gauges. I was hoping that the EGT limit was higher than 1600. Not that it matters when your drag racing, but I think it would be good to tell exactly how hot you were runnin'.
svpdiesel 12-23-2004, 01:25 PM I have the SPA guage, and like it a lot. It does have outputs for remote light and programble alarm paramters, so you could probably use these to trigger a NOS system. The boost sensor wants a good ground, and I had to run a separate wire for that, but I haven't had any problems or complaints. It also has a handy memory function to recall maximums. Kennedy has them.
Steve
Kennedy 12-23-2004, 02:44 PM The max that the SPA will read is 178x°f in my experience. I've never seen 1800°f
HoustonDMax 12-23-2004, 03:30 PM 1780 is the max in memory on mine right now. Never had any higher value in memory.
Fingers 12-23-2004, 03:43 PM Pyrometer or guage limitation?
HoustonDMax 12-23-2004, 04:08 PM Don't know for a fact, but based upon others in the past saying the max they had seen was 1780 something, I assume guage. Maybe JK knows for sure, since he sells them (that's where mine came from).

IMHO, it very closely followed the Superflow Dyno EGT gauge. I've seen 1960F during some dyno testing.   of course this was trying out different stacks and generally being stupid. :D
I consider myself conservative compared to "Got Juice". :D
BMDMAX 12-23-2004, 05:31 PM Pyrometer or guage limitation?
Gauge limit. I have never seen 1800 on mine either and I can cross 2000 on the Attitude. I am running two extremely sensitive pyros supplied by JK.
McRat 12-23-2004, 05:40 PM My guess is that it internally calculates in Celsius, then translates to Farenheit, is a 3 digit deg gauge that goes in 25 deg increments. Since the highest number it can handle would be 975, that comes to 1787 deg F.
Yes, I am bored at work.
Got Juice? 12-23-2004, 06:09 PM I've seen 1800F.....

Hey, In my real life I AM conservative.):h
Is it my fault that Aluminum Melts at 1400F? NO!
Is it my fault that GM did not design the turbo with the 100% Safety margin most turbos have? (who knew 170,000KRpms was bad.... ok, so i did what's yer point?):h )
I have seen over 1900F...... for brief periods.... unless you count the runaway burning crank oil.... that was a scary testament to the inherent strength of the DMX engine.
PEANUTGRWR 12-23-2004, 07:52 PM I LIKED MY SPA GUAGE OTHER THAN I HAD TO RECALIBRATE THE PRESSURE TRANSDUCER. WHEN THE TRUCK WASNT EVEN RUNNING IT WOULD EITHER SHOW + OR - 1 LB OF BOOST LOTS OF TIMES:confused:
WanaDmxsub 12-24-2004, 12:42 AM Hmmm...only 98 more to go...1702 in history...No, it was not on the Dyno...it was on the freeway  in 40deg ambient temps (No A/C this time) running a Predator 85 tune. But I did put an Avalanche back in his place (I don't think he was stock, gave me a good run.
Love the SPA:ro)
I've seen 1800F.....
Diesel Dragon 12-24-2004, 02:17 PM Mine's been up to 1799 in memory
Had problem's with the internal light in the guage. Had to replace the guage twice.
And I had to change to the new design EGT sending unit as the old one went bad.
Also the Boost sending unit needs to be recalibrated every once in a while.
Needless to say SPA guage's Won't be my next guage manufacturer.
I'm waiting for the Nexus guages from Autometer to come out and then it's bye-bye to SPA.
I think the Nexus guages will be able to control nitrious or propane activation.
Call up Autometer tech line and they would have more info on it.
My .02
HoustonDMax 12-24-2004, 03:00 PM I have had the internal LED issues as well, more than once (or twice, for that matter). SPA has stepped up to the plate and handled it every time. My current guage has been in for a good six months, and no lights out (knock on wood!).
My boost pressure transducer does occasionally need calibrating, as well.
Also, cold weather seems to cause it to read up to a few pounds low; once it warms up under the hood, back to normal. Cold weather, south-east Texas style; I would hate to see where it starts if I lived in some of the climates some of you live in. Brrrrrrr!
As long as SPA stands behind it if I have any more issues, I will keep running it. Nice getting a new warranty with every new guage.
