: Heavy smoke, reduced MPG
shrubber 12-22-2004, 08:46 PM Greetings!
I have noticed a drop off in MPG (from 19 to 20 mpg down to 14 to 16) and a lot more dark smoke when under minor acceleration (warm or cold). I had 2 injectors replaced about 11,000 miles ago, now have 84,000. No fuel in the crankcase (thats how I found the injector problem), do you think that I have more injector problems? Power seems normal, etc.:confused::confused::confused::confused:
Thanks!!!!!

Max Owner 12-23-2004, 09:18 PM How 'bout your air filter? Clean/dirty?
Injectors......maybe?
Kurt W. 12-23-2004, 10:34 PM I've noticed the same thing on my 02. I first got it back in July. The first couple times I refueled I was getting from 18.5-19.5, now I'm getting a little over 15. I do a lot of short runnings, would that be why? I seem to still drive the same. Dunno?
socaldieseltech 12-24-2004, 12:41 AM Maybe its the winter fuel?
shrubber 12-24-2004, 12:54 AM I've checked the air filter, clean! no change in fueling stations, or driving habits. I am soon to install a new nsbu switch, as the current one is starting to go (blank shift position indicator bar, holding third on uphill acceleration, etc.). I am hoping that this black smoke isn't an indicator that the injectors are dumping to much fuel. Maybe the winter fuel has a lower cetane rating?

socaldieseltech 12-24-2004, 01:11 AM The black smoke sounds like possible injector problems. You have smoke and mileage issues, I think is possibly a combo of winter fuel and injectors.
Loki_nine 12-24-2004, 01:37 AM Maybe someone forgot to finish doing something (after your last repair/service)
Sounds turbo/intake related to me (at least from that short description anyway)
Happy holiday everyone.

Can you elaborate? Turbo/intake related?
BlueMaxxxx 12-24-2004, 06:53 AM I have recently had the same problems. MPG drop from avg 18 down to 16 more smoke on acceleration etc. I just got my oil analysis back and no fuel problems. I'm thinking winter blended fuels and cold weather.
skoryaro2 12-24-2004, 08:33 AM I know this is a LB7 thread but wanted to chime in with this........
For the 5K miles I've had my '05 LLY I haven't seen a puff of black smoke. Couldn't get it to do it when I tried. Yesterday I noticed for the first time that it now gives a puff of black smoke everytime I accelerate. I run Stanadyne additive every tank. I was immediately concerned, because my MPG's dropped 1 MPG lately, but I have no other issues (good power, smooth idle, no fuel in crankcase) so I'd have to assume it is winter blend fuel as it has really gotten cold here over the past week or so.

patrick 12-25-2004, 08:20 PM seen injectors do that. are you in the WI area let me know We eill look at it.
