I am new to the forum but have had my 2002 chevy HD 4x4 shortbed with the duramax/allison drivetrain of course, since brand new.
I am looking for opinions on whether it would be sensible to convert my truck to a dually, I would like to do this because of the size of my fifth wheel trailer, or would it make more sense to sell it and get a dually.
Has anyone here done this or have any info?
Thanks.

no matter what you do to the truck the dot will always go by the gvw listed in the door jamb.
i have seen a dually kit that adds 2 wheel/tire combo to the rear end. dont remember who makes it but its out there. then you would have to get a new box or find an after market extended fender to cover the wheels.
other thing to think of is difference in frame, rear end size, brakes etc between the 2500hd and a 3500 dually.
i would just go out and buy a dually. this would be a lot of work to convert and it still wouldnt be a dually in the eyes of the dot. just my 2 cents

I did convert a F250 into a dually years ago. I used a company called Arrowcraft out of Royal Oak, MI for the parts I could not get locally. They are a good company and have top quailty products. My truck was a long bed so I just went to a junk yard and found a long bed dually from another year model that fit. Next , I worked with a parts guy at the local dealership for parts to hook up the fuel tank fill tubes. I purchased all the adaptors and lug nuts and Alcoa wheels from Arrowcraft. I used that converted truck for about 18 years after the conversion and never had one bit of problems with any of it.
It can be done, and it is a fun project if you have the time.
Arrowcraft phone number is 248-280-0210.

Ive seen it done on a truck around here... didnt look bad and he said that it was cheaper then getting a dually the same year, didnt know how that would be possible but then again i didnt research it either.
