Been reading up on EFI live the last couple of days and I have some questions. If I buy EFI live some of the vendors give you a free tune or two. As I'm learning the system could I buy/download already made programs and load them into the truck? If you get the DSP5 could you get: stock, Kennedy Diesel tow tune, a performance tune, a "smoke" tune, and a "hot" tune such as Moonshine. Just wondering if you can buy ready made tunes to get you started before I get good enough and trust myself enough to make my own? Thanks Chris

I am sure many people will sell you extra tunes. You are lucky that you have an lly. The dp5 is not even close for the lbz.

DSP is a custom operating system that you load to create your multiple tunes. It contains a select range of tables that you manipulate on each of the subsequent tunes. Effectively you could have your stock tune, tow tune and 3 other tunes, but they are all built off the same set of base parameters that are flashed in.
So technically you can have the 5 tunes you want, but realisticly speaking your not going to be able to have a Kennedy tune and a Moonshine tune on the same switch. Firstly, I doubt that John or Tony (or who ever else) would openly send their tune to *someone* to patch the two together to implement in the one flash, and I'd also suggest that while many of the parameters they each modify may be the same, I also think that a number of them would be different and most likely outside of the scope of DSP.
In terms of starting to tune yourself there are a number of threads with other peoples tunes in them. I'd suggest looking through these and comparing what they have changed to receive their results. Asking the DP public to review your tune is also a good way to get feedback, as is the EFI University course which is being run by McRat. There are also vendors like Nick @ DuramaxTuner.com do sell access to a tune library.
Cheers

Thank you. I'm just beginning to learn about the program and I'm sure I'll have a lot more "dumb" questions before long!

Let me know if I can help. There's a lot of information to take in, it's important to have your questions answered before you pull the trigger.

Some tunes that are purchased are locked so there would be no way to put them in your DSP5 unless they were written as a DSP5 tune.

It wouldn't work to copy and paste the tables into a DSP5 tune? Or are the locked tunes set up so that you can't even see that data in the tables? Just asking because I've not run into that yet. :)

if the tune is locked you will not be able to see the data, or change it.

do any of the venders who sell custom programed ECM's sell just the tune to let you download or whatever you need to do to load and run it in your truck without sending in your ECM or buying one of their ECM's. I guess I'm just a little weary about loading a tune that I don't know who made it. I'd feel better about loading a tune from McRat, Kennedy, Ridgerunner etc among others. I wouldn't worry so much if the truck was all paid for and I had enough cash laying around for a new motor if the sh*t hit the fan!

I would imagine so, I know Trippin sends a tow tune to you when you get your EFI from him cause thats what I ended up with. But I bet all the others would do that too.
