Changed the fuel filter for the first time @ 8000 mi. I cut it open and the bottom 1/2 looked like it was full of coal dust. I don't think it would have made it to 15000 mi. Much easier to change than I thought. Didn't have to bend anything out of the way. I'm sure they could have found a better place to mount the filter. It just goes to us that the engineers had no intention of EVER changing their own fuel filters. This site is full of great information. :) 04.5 lly stock.

You must have some small hands. I can't get mine out without some bending.
The filter will last as long as the fuel supply will let it. There are variables at every fueling station that you can't help. Such as dirt in the tank, unmaintained filters in their pumps, water, algae , bacteria, you get the hint. You can control where you purchase from. I recommend truck stops .

If you think the placement is tough, try doing it on a 6.5TD. A little easier as far as placement, but bleeding it is a pain. I enjoy my Dmax. If it would make it easier, for those with bigger hands, remove the inner splash guard on the passenger side and remove it. Made it easier for me.

Had to bend the filter wrench a little, didn't bleed the filter down and it came out with room to spare. Could have had a little more slack in the wires though. My shooting glover are x-large.

Here are my filters. I changed them at a little over 15K miles on the truck with 10K miles on the filters themselves. The OEM filter looks to be in good shape for 10K. The Nicktane system seems to be doing it's job. I've included the 5K change as well (last pic). It shows how much the pre-filtration helps because it was the only filter on up to the 5K miles point on my truck.

Also I've used Primrose 405 on every tank.

What I do is buy my fuel in bulk and pump it into my 100 and 55 gallon tanks. Then I run it through 2 filters and a water separation system that is built into my pumps on each tank. Even my secondary micron filters (on other diesel machines) stay clean for a very long time that way.

Changed my original OEM fuel filter today at 5000 miles and replaced it with the new dual element filter.
Here's a pic - no rust - Stanadyne at every fill (just switched to Power Service though)
