Is there a way to tell by RPO codes whether or not a rig has the 9.5" or 10.5" ring gear rear end?

You can look at the axle the 10.5 has floating axle shafts that bolt in from outside the wheel hub. Its a 8 bolt flange that sticks out the center of the rim.
you can unbolt the axles and remove them with the wheels, brake drums, hubs, still on the truck

I'm trying to determine which one it has without actually seeing the truck, with only the RPO codes. The truck is 200 miles away and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go take a look at it. This is but one of the questions I would like answers to, but figured this was as good of a place to start as any.

You should be able to tell from the RPO's, and probably from the VIN if ya have it. The VIN will give the GVW which should help. The RPO's are listed in the FAQ's.

Here's the build sheet (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2217873&postcount=3). Point out where I can tell which rear end is under it. I must be blind or don't know what I'm lookin for.

I see a GVWR of 8619lb, and the JD7 hydro-power disc/drum brakes, but no definite answer as to which rear end it's equipped with.

That one should have a 10.5" 14 bolt full floater. All of the 250 diesel subs had the heavier axle. I see from the build sheet it says 3.73 gears, so that's another clue as to the 10.5" diff. And the 8600 is DEFINATELY a dead giveaway for a 10.5" rear diff. The 9.5" was only offered up to a 7700 GVWR max I believe.

There is an option code listed for this truck as "R9B: 10.5" axle tracking option". Combine this with the fact that it is a diesel and has an 8600+lb GVW and the smart money would bet that it has the 14-bolt 10.5" full floater...

Thanks guys. I was also assuming the 10.5" based on the info in the VIN report, but I'm more confident since you all came to the same conclusion.

Making a trip to go look at this truck tomorrow. 3.73's might be nice, after driving my current truck with 4.10s the last 4 years, but I'm a bit bummed it doesn't have the G80 gov lock in the rear. I guess a Detroit can be installed easily enough.

Thanks!
