93 gm dually with 92 crate 6.5 diesel hummer (new) motor wont start after 20 mins of stop time after a long drive (1 hour). But if i open filter canister lift out filter drain and replace (same filter) close canister then it starts? no h2o in filter! any thoughts on this. thanks

Having never known about crate motors, I'm guessing, is there a new injection pump on it? Almost sounds like a case of DB2 pump with heat soak not wanting to start.

How often do you do this filter trick to get it started? May just be a fluke that you fiddle with it long enough for it to start working again?

Thats what I was wondering about. Could try the ice, cold water snow trick next time. might confirm hot head restarting problem.

Try blowing compressed air from the IP back ito the filter housing and out the lift pump connection(lift pump detached) and then from the other LP connector back to the tank.

Do the non EFI 6.5 still use the electric lift's or do they use the old style like a gasser and 6.2's did?

Good question. I *think* the 93's have a regular electric lift pump.

Try the warm/room temperature pint of water over top of the injection pump next time it's hot and doesn't want to start. If it starts right up, sounds like an IP problem. Maybe TDG could come over and chat about this one here.

'93 has the 12v LP.

what are you thinking some kind of blockage? or a leaking valve that lets air in the system and it has to be re primed for the motor to start? just trying to make sense of your fix. but i'll tell my friend to try this.

The compressed air dislodges the crap out of the filter housing and off the pickup sock. Bleed the drain T well afterwards and then prime it.

The 92-93 trucks had a terrible problem with "heat soak". The heads go bad in the injection pump and simply will not pump hot "thin" diesel fuel under pressure. The main and most common pump was model DS-4911. Stanadyne even extended the warranty on those pumps but the warranty is long gone now. The fix is a new head and rotor installed in the injection pump. Actually did some un-scientific testing one day on one by pouring regular tap water on one. When the pump temp was brought down to 105 degrees the truck would crank. Anything over that and it would not start.

No doubt, this is THE complaint with the 4911/5088 pumps, hard start hot. But often the H&R itself is not bad, new Delivery Valve/Spring/Stop, fresh Transfer Pump/Regulator and oversized Advance piston fixes a lot of them. Of course old style heads (29123) will always be suspect, and most fuel shops will update them (31505).
