: Extended warranties?
s-moe 12-21-2004, 09:47 AM Who out there has an extended warranty on their truck outside of the 36k and the 100k on the motor?
How much did you pay?
From whom did you purchase?
If you have used it, were you pleased with the results? ie would you purchase one again?
Just curious as I am down to my final 6k on my factory warranty.

Duratys 12-21-2004, 10:04 AM At The Time Of Purchasing My Truck I Was Using It For Work, So I Figured I Should Get It. I Left It At 3yr But Extended To 120 Or 160000km (cant Remember) Now I Am Using A Company Truck (04 F-150..........i Know I Know, But Its Free) And Am Thinkin About Dropping Mileage And Adding Years. I Paid $2500(cdn) The Day I Bought It And Was Told That I Could Change It At Any Time....for A Small Fee Of Course. It Was Bought Through Gm And Is Still Under Factory Warrenty. I Think I Would Get It Again As $2500 Isnt Too Bad Considering The Price Of Parts And Labour.i Bought Extended On My 04 Nissan Pathfinder As Well. Nice Thing About Gm's Is Its Transferable And Can Be Changed Atany Time, If Your Driving Habbits Change. Thats All I Can Say???
JEBar 12-21-2004, 11:05 AM shortly after purchasing our '02 we bought an extended warranty from Warranty Gold ... they are still in business but strongly recommend staying away from them ... they declared bankruptcy, left thousands of us holding the bag, and went right on selling warranties

rvarner 12-21-2004, 08:14 PM Bought mine (GMPP) at approx. 20k miles from Ourisman's Chev in Wheaton, MD and paid $1600 for a 72/75, $100ded. They are supposedly charging only $50 over their cost. Contact Latoya Gardner at 301-946-0001 X330. Kinda glad I did cause I have had unit in 4 times for "service 4wd soon", once for injectors at 27K and, most recently, allison "drainback" problem (all covered under factory warranty). Hope I'll never need the extended warranty but glad I got it. Also is transferrable and may be a good selling point when it's time.

sprintmod1 12-22-2004, 11:11 AM I have purchased three extended warranties from warrantybynet; very reasonably priced and I have had excellent service each time; plus you can use the dealer or any mechanic that you trust--I like using a local shop that I know the mechanic at, so it works really well. With the 100,000 Duramax warranty, they have a "wrap" plan that covers everything else including the Allison and gives you a break on the cost of the warranty which I think is pretty cool. You can check it out at www.warrantybynet.com
haneym 12-23-2004, 02:03 PM just a note here. i just turned 30k on my truck over the weekend and have been thinking about the extended warranty. based on the above post, i called warrantybynet (wouldnt give me an online quote cause then there sales people couldnt work their "magic") to get a quote. after asking me a bunch of questions, he told me he could give me a "special" price but only if i agreed to purchase today. i told him i was not buying right now, i am still contemplating it and shopping around. he relunctantly gave me a quote of $1365 for 3yrs/75k miles (3yrs from today, but 45k miles on top of my 30k). not a bad quote, but this guy was a complete rude jackass. not suprisingly, he had a strong new york/new jersey type accent (no offense anyone from there). when i thanked him for the information and told him i was still deciding, he went into a spiel about how they are the only company licensed to do business in florida (not sure if thats true) and i told him i was also checking with GM. he then said they would be 3x as much and didnt cover most of what they did. when i asked what that was, he said they cover shocks, tire replacement, alternators, etc. i told him i have lifetime rancho shocks, get road hazard on my tires and would not put in a claim (with $100 deduct) for a $75 alternator, i only want it for major things that would be a lot of money to replace (ie - computer, tranny, abs, etc...) he said FINE and hung up the phone.
this rep was a completely unprofessional jerk and i would never give them a dollar of my business. just FYI.
ps - i will post what GMs quote is after i talk to them.
haneym 12-23-2004, 02:30 PM FYI - just got off the phone with the extremely nice and helpful guy at the local dealership who deals with warranties. since the truck is still under factory warranty, i would get the same type of thing as if i bought it new (ie, coverage starts from day truck was delivered to original owner). we determined a 6yr/72k would be best so i would get another 4 yrs and 42k miles of coverage. same coverage as the factory warranty (all but normal wear and tear items) with a $100 deduct for $1800. a little more expensive, but i will go this route if i decide to do it. also, through the end of the year (next friday), GM is offering 0% interest 12 payments on extended warranties. this is for my 6.0L so i dunno what the difference would be on a duramax.
HoustonDMax 12-23-2004, 03:57 PM There is (was?) a member here who worked at a dealership somewhere in the Dallas area (IIRC) that sold sold the GMPP warranties to some of the members here. I don't remeber what his name was (seems like it had something to to with Texas), but you could probably find something by searching, or maybe he will chime in. I checked his price one time with my brother who works at a dealership, and, IIRC, the member's price was like $100 over cost.
I had my brother give me a copy of the cost tables, when I recently bought one for my wifes Denali two months ago. Made it a condition of the vehicle sale, after price was agreed upon. Can't find my paperwork right now, but it was somewhere around $900 bucks for a 72 month/75K mile, $0 deductible GMPP, which was right around $100 over cost. I think the AWD Denali was in the same class as the 4WD trucks, so it would seem you should be able to do better than your initial quote. I will look further for my paperwork to verify my figures.
Also noticed while I was shopping that the starting price for some of the dealers was over twice cost.
There are also several dealers that will sell you a GMPP for a pretty good price. Have to search the net for them, if you can't find one local.
Morale: Do your homework, before going with the first quote.
SPICER 12-23-2004, 04:14 PM This is just my opinion........Extended warranties are a form of insurance.......insurance is a business......businesses are out to make money.......If 10 people buy a warranty for $1,500 each, that is 15k. The insurance companies expect to pay out some money, but bet your butt they will not pay out 15k. In other words......more often than not you will pay more for the warranty than you will get out of it. If this was not true, they would be out of business in a heart beat. Some may do very well with their purchase of a warranty, most will lose money on the deal. Owning a truck out of warranty is a gamble, and so is buying an extended warranty. Do you feel lucky?
I opted not to get one.....it is a sales job getting you to buy one, may pay off, probably won't. I think you only hear the success stories because those who win on the deal are eager to brag. Those who don't make out on the deal tend to walk away quietly, knowing it was a gamble. SPICER
Bronco 12-23-2004, 04:16 PM I bought one when I purchased the truck. It is a 6 year 100,000 mile warranty.
( Platinum) It basically covers everything except cosmetics. I belive it even covers some maintence items. ( brakes)
It is through Fidelity in St. Petersburg Florida. I have never had to use it. I just rolled over 38K.
If I have to use it, I sure hope they are there for me. If they do not treat me right, I will be sure and update this forumn with all of the details. I plan on using the internet as a way to keep the score even. I hope it works.
Oilbrnr 12-23-2004, 04:26 PM Spicer is correct. Extended warranties are sucker bets. There are big spiffs back to the F&I guys who sell them too. No different when you go to Best Buy or any other retailer that is trying to get you to buy into fear.
*If* I were to buy a policy, it would be from the OEM, not some third party. I've known several people who have had difficulty making successful claims.
Alan Drake 12-24-2004, 09:52 AM Purchased a 72/100 GM contract when truck had 10K miles for $1305 with $200 deductible from Fichtner Chev, Laurel, Montana. Ask for Dennis Fichtner at 800-234-5284. YES it's an insurance policy, however I felt its worth it in this new world of computers, just did not feel lucky. Not to be read as a slam!
OH, new federal leg will keep all info inside the dealership making any repairs dealer only (including a new key). Its not hear yet, but close. Subject for a new topic.
renagade 12-25-2004, 11:13 AM Spicer is correct.
You could make this statement about any insurance item. Health insurance , home owners, buisness liability, life, ect. Insurance is a peace of mind. It all depends on how long you plan on keeping the vehicle and weather you can afford the repairs. I personally bought insurance from myself. I can pay the bill down the road. health insurance is another story....Its a better suckers bet to make. Weigh your options and budget and make a descision.
On another note. I hate when you buy a supposidly good and reliable item and they try to sell you a warrenty. Its suppose to last right? If everyone walked away when they tried to sell you a warrenty and told them it must be a piece of cr*p . This conversation would not be taken place.
sprintmod1 12-27-2004, 12:00 PM haneym,
I just checked with a buddy who bought a new truck and got a warrantybynet policy; seems that he got the same type of spiel; they may have changed the marketing tactics?? Not sure. I have had three of them and have not had any problems including a lot of front end work on my 01 2500 Suburban which more than recovered my initial premium on that truck. Spicer, yes, it is an insurance policy, but in the world of electronics and computers??
Here is my quote for my 04 D/A:
Dear :
If you go with the 5 year/100,000 mile Premier Diesel Wrap it would be
$875 with a $100 deductible or $988 with a $0 deductible. The
regular Premier plan is more expensive. If you need a payment plan, we need
a half down and I could the balance over 10 months.

haneym 12-28-2004, 08:48 AM sprintmod - interesting. it may have just been the one salesman that answered my call, who knows. when i am treated like that though, i will not go back.
spicer you are absolutely right, it is nothing but an insurance plan. on my 89 k1500 i could work on just about anything. on this thing though, everything is so damn computerized i am just about SOL on everything but routine maintenance. if i had $30k sitting in my checking account i wouldnt worry about it. unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it, haha), i am young, recently married and bought a house last year so my cash is a little strapped. if something went out on my truck and it cost $3000 to fix, it would hit me pretty hard. its nothing more than a gamble, how much do you wanna risk it?? luckily i bought a chevy so i am less worried about it. if i bought a ford or dodge (yea right!), i sure as hell would have it under warranty the whole time i owned it cause you are GUARANTEED something it going wrong with it! ahah
if anybody has a particular dealer or contact that gives a deal on a GM warranty, let me know. for $1800, ill take my chances.
sprintmod1 12-28-2004, 12:14 PM haneym,
That garbage does bother me a lot too. Sorry they were so rude to you. Guess I will stop recommending them and send them an email about it too. Be interesting to see if I get any response.
cwq21 12-28-2004, 01:54 PM The only extended warranty that I've bought came with (in writing) a statement that if I didn't use it I would be refunded my full purchase price at the end of the warranty period. I know they are using my money for free and collecting interest, but its on the wife's '02 Suburban and with all the computers I thought it was worth it.
The way he explained it was that it was an incentive not to use it for the small things I could do myself, but for anything major that might hapen, so I am trying it.
It was for 6 years/ 100,000 miles and cost $1,500.
Tim@DOA 01-03-2005, 08:14 PM Something I'll take a moment to mention, whichever warranty you chose to buy, take a moment 48 hours after purchase and pop into a dealership of choice, and have them run your vin to be certain you are "in the system." My GMPP left me hanging with a serious electrical issue because somwhere in the mix my information was not inputed correctly. Even though by chance I had the warr. purchase paperwork in hand, the charges had to be paid by myself, and a reimbursement was denied by the servicing dealership.
JRKRACE 01-03-2005, 11:28 PM I got a GM premium warranty from www.gmoutlet.com. Click on GM Protection plan and go from there. On my wifes 2002 Yukon XL it was 1100.00 for 6 year 72000. Good Deal to me...
Pro400exc 01-04-2005, 12:52 PM Hey Fella's...
If my 03 Silverado has 125K miles on it...Is there any way possible I can get a warrenty on it?..I am afraid the tranny may be goin ina lil and i dnt feel like sheeling out the total amount for it..also my headgasket blown..(shes ok for now) but i also dnt wanna shell out the flow for that either..so what should i do?
I heard of this additive that you put in your engine/tranny/rear...its covered for 100K miles as long as you keep reciepts of your oil being changed every 4k miles by someone(can't be done by you) and then keeping the tranny and rear done as told by manufature...thuink its bull or any good?
peekok 01-04-2005, 01:03 PM it was all phycological for me. everytime my truck got to 30k miles i would trade it off thinking something major was going to happen. went through a lot of trucks i still wish i had. so this time i bought the "suckers bet" and im quite content now. wish i had done it the first time. i dont even care if i ever use it, i just like that piece of mind.):h
Joe Pool 01-04-2005, 11:33 PM I don't know if he is still around, but I bought a GMPP warranty through Blake Huddleston at Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine TX. His number was 1-800-259-1200. He was TXDMAX on this sight. Blake was real easy to deal with.
My warranty is 72 months/75,000 miles/$0 deductible and I paid less than 2K for it.
My truck is a 2002 2500HD D/A CC SB 4x4 LT
Joe
Sorry to dredge up old threads, but.... I had an Ext Warranty on my 00 Furd Exped. The Ford Platinum Premium holy grail of warranties.... yeah right.... Everybody seems to focus on computer issues... heres what happened to me. I had continuous intermittent problems with my 4wd engaging (with out any of my input) and I think I took that POS into 3 different stealerships on 6 different occasions over the course of a year... it would always work when the tech would drive it, and could not find anything amiss, however on one occasion the thing acted up as I was driving out of the parking lot on pick up, I immediately went back... short story long they ended up replacing the GEM module and telling me that my proffesionally install VIPER 550 hf remote start/alarm must be causing the issues because they cant find anything else and that if it act up again im SOL.... All the while paying regular shop/labor charges because unless there is a broken part for them to "send back" they cannot cover the work under warranty.... ALL THIEFS AND LIARS... needless to say I didnt get one on my 03 sierra d/a (hopefully I will not regret it)
GMCSID 02-07-2005, 11:35 AM I would recommend nothing but GMPP Major Guard. Not because I work at a GM dealer but because I have worked on vehicles with many different warranties. I have put junk yard parts on vehicles with other warranties. GMPP will use only original GM parts.
