I was at the local Big lots last week and they had Kendall Synthetic blend oil (5w-30) for $2 a qt. Anyone know anything about Kendall. I have heard that some guys swear by it. I bought enough to change the oil a couple of times in my work truck but I didn't get any for the HD because I didn't know anything about it.

If it is rated for your truck, then it will be OK. I have seen it used in 80's/90's BMW motorcycles and have used it myself for that. It is a good oil for that purpose and valued because it does not "seep" past older seals and O-rings.
Look at these: http://www.rateitall.com/i-240860-kendall-motor-oil.aspx

I now have a gas burner so I didn't check to see if it was rated for a diesel. However, it did say that it exceeded ford gm and chrysler specs.
I only bought it for my s-10 but at $2 a qt for synthetic blend I might buy a bunch if it is good oil.
I have been using 76 Royal Triton which is owned by the same company overall as Kendall, with great results.
IIRC, Kendall is part of Conoco/Phillips/Kendall and they are the 4th largest refinery in the US.

The Kendall from the 70's and 80's that everyone loved was the famous green stuff produced by Witco at their own small refinery in Pennsylvania. A very similar product is being produced now by Brad-Penn in the same refinery.

Haven't seen Kendall for years. Kendall was one of the Pennsylvania base oils (paraffin-based) along with Quaker State, Pennzoil, Wolf's Head (Valvoline used the same type base, but was KY). Over the years, the oil companies merged to the point where I think Shell under the SOPUS label owns most everything PA. Anyhow, Kendall always had a good rep.
Big Lots? I'll have to swing in there.
Related, I see that Advance is having a Quaker State synthetic promotion of about $3.99/qt

I've been using The GT-1 oil for 25+ years on race motors and everyday cars. I quite using it for the racecar ever since they changed from the good old green stuff formula. But I still use it on my everyday cars. Currently have a 350 chevy gasser pick-up that has 108K and no problems with the new blend and a Le Sabre with 90K and again no problems. Funny I just bought a bunch from Big Lots myself. I haven't bought any of the Brad-Penn stuff, now that we have a special blend made for use for racing from another company.

Maybe you can but its not reccomended. I think 15w/20w-40/50 is what we should be using.

Maybe you can but its not reccomended. My 2006 Duramax Diesel Engine book says on page 5-23 "SAE 15W-40 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10W-30 at temperatures above 0 F."
