: Duramax Exhaust
weester 12-20-2004, 05:43 PM I am wondering if anyone has a MBRP system on duramax, i can't stand the sound of the banks exhaust and all the idiots around here all run it.Anyone have any comments on MBRP or can you steer me in the right direction on a good sounding and performing exhaust system, any audio clips would help too.

dakotacustoms 12-20-2004, 05:51 PM We just installed a 4" MBRP on a customers rig on friday, and it sounded awesome, he loved it. Any other questions feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Nick@dakotacustoms
weester 12-20-2004, 05:58 PM It didn't sound like a banks did it?Was it throaty.

lakingslayer 12-20-2004, 07:38 PM try this site out for some clips of MBRP exhaust systems.

weester 12-20-2004, 08:13 PM how do you like your exhaust?
trpr4mance 12-20-2004, 08:37 PM I Am Running A Magnaflow Turbo-back On My Lly And It Sounds *****in. Plus It Is Full Stainless And Fits Perfect. Check Out Magnaflow.com For Sound Clips.
hotrent1 12-20-2004, 09:21 PM I have had mbrp for 3 months and everyone is amazed at its sound. Most will look under truck when i tell them it is four inch from turbo downpipe back no cat just 4" pipe all the way. Purchased from one of our sponsors.
briano 12-20-2004, 10:36 PM I had installed the complete SS Motoblue kit and I liked the sound, or lack there of.. it was quiet, but had a throaty tone to it. I have since removed it due to other reasons, but I liked the kit itself and the sound.
mahalkita 12-20-2004, 10:50 PM Just checked the Magnaflow site. Very nice sounding system. Maybe the soundclip is of better quality than the MBPR - the Magnaflow clip sounds better IMHO. Will check into that.

Are you using a muffler at all?

Romark1 12-21-2004, 10:00 AM So what is wrong with the Banks? I listened to the Magnaflow sounds and they sound good but do they have a drone in the cab?
Exhaust sound is very subjective. I'm not 18 years old anymore and I don't want the loudest system possible just a little nice rumble outside. If I wanted loud I would have kept my Ford P/S.
So having said all that, how loud in the cab is these systems? Banks is my first choice I think, but not completely sold yet. I like the MBPR but the muffler looks small. Does this equal loud in the cab?
Mark
trpr4mance 12-21-2004, 11:08 AM in the cab my magnaflow is very quiet, only slightly louder than stock. outside has a nice deep bark. i sell a bunch of exhaust systems for all kinds of customers and most prefer the magnaflow system. never had on complaint of being too loud.
Romark1 12-21-2004, 11:21 AM What company are you with that sells these exhaust systems?
Do you have any input on the sound levels on the other brands listed earlier? (Banks, MBPR)
Thanks
Mark
lakingslayer 12-21-2004, 11:25 AM how do you like your exhaust?
So far so good. 10K miles and :) ing.
Romark1 12-21-2004, 11:30 AM What do you mean lakingslayer? How is the in the cab loise level?
We are going on a driving trip to Yellowstone as soon as the kids get out of school so I don't wand a lout drone for 4000 miles.
Thanks,
Mark
Romark1 12-21-2004, 11:39 AM I see the post was moved. Shouldn't it be in the "Performance" area?
SSNIGHTMARE 12-21-2004, 02:18 PM I just installed the MBRP cool duals on my truck this weekend. I think they sound really good, but of course I wanted something that was loud. It was a really good kit and easy to install. I would recommend it, but it's all in what you want your truck to sound like. MBRP has one of the louder exhaust kits for a diesel truck.
I have a friend that has 2 psd with Banks exhaust on. I personally do not like it. It is not loud at all. I dont know if it a fair comparison or not to the Duramax system, but the banks psd system is quiet.
lovette 12-21-2004, 02:30 PM I like my Magnaflow sound. Polished muffler and tip looks good.
Diesel Dually 12-21-2004, 11:12 PM But what does it sound like in the truck???
I do like the throaty roar on the outside (went to the link provided) but it is what is on the inside which will decide for Wifey!
Mark Craig 12-22-2004, 09:21 AM Romark1,
The MBRP muffler is a total of 30 inches in length, I think the Magnaflow is 14 inches per their catalog anyway. I used to sell them years ago and the Duramax muffler was very short then as well. Plus the MBRP uses a spiral louver that really adds a deep rumble while the Magnaflwo uses a perforated tube and it just sounds different, not bad just different.
For those listening to sound bites be forwarned they are just a representation of the sound as it's easy to make it sound like you want it to sound on a sound bite, but may or may not be "real world", the ones we have are "as" recorded so they are pretty accurate.

Duramax Dually 12-22-2004, 11:10 AM Just installed 4" MotoBlue SST exhaust yesterday. Was very easy install. Kit was interesting as it is a universal mandrel bent kit and came with all tubing for Short bed and Long Bed. Left me an extra 16 inch piece of 4" SST tubing. The Kit could have been installed in about an hour but we made the process a little longer as we flanged it like the factory for removal should it ever be required and welded the rest to avoid leaks. The 5" SST tip looks nice. Hard to believe they can make a kit that inexpensive.
As for road comments, Has a very nice little "Throaty' sound right off idle and under acceleration and then tames down very nicely after 45mph. Cruise sound at 50-70mph was virtually undetected. You definitely know you have an exhaust system when you stomp on it. Overall I added the AFE Stage 2 Pro 7, the Edge and now the exhaust in last 4 days. The seat of your pants feel is worth every penny. The exhaust addition was quite noticeable in conjunction with the Edge. Running tank full of fuel now. See how MPG is affected....
Romark1 12-23-2004, 04:48 PM Thanks Mark Craig,
I called your company this week and spoke with someone whom was very helpful. I need to get through Christmas before I do anything to my truck. (Bought the wife new living room furnature. Ouch! That hurts.)
My only real concern is keeping any highway drone out of the cab.
Looking foreward to speaking with you in the future.
Have a Merry Christmas,
Mark
pk911 12-24-2004, 05:37 PM Well right now I am a happy camper thanks to all the posts that have been made regarding upgrades. Just so let you all know, I installed the Afe stage 2 but the pipe does not fit well at all so some mods may have to be made there or the pipe goes back. Running the predator on 85hp with the magnaflow from the cat back. Nice sound, nothing intrusive. Most of all, this truck is a hoot to drive. I left Fort Lauderdale yesterday with the setup and ran 80 mph pretty much the whole way, average manually 18mpg. When I head back I am going to switch to the 65hp and see what kind of mileage I get. I cannot believe the power to pass, it is like having a sports car I never had:ro) . Very glad I went with the predator and highly recommend it. I will post the results after Jan. when I get back. Thanks again to this board for sharing thier thoughts, ideas, problems and solutions. Have a great holiday to all.):h

Great glad they helped, let us know when you need us.

Glad to see you are really doing your homework on the exhaust systems. With our MBRPinc system you do have one added option IF the system is too loud inside the cab.
At MBRPinc we offer a diesel resonator for those who wish to tone down the exhaust systems. This is a straight through high flow resonator designed to just take the edge off if needed.
When we first designed this component my technical director had one installed on my 2004 DMAX one afternoon. I did not know that the resonator had been installed, when I left the office that evening I noticed that my DMAX was very quiet outside and quiet inside the cab.................. to quiet for me. I had it removed a couple days later, as it was to quiet for my tastes.
Just wanted to let you know of the option, if you were to find the exhaust more than you wanted. All of our dealers have this part available for you.
Hope this helps. Have a great New Year's.
Mark Craig 12-30-2004, 09:39 AM MBRP,
Yes that is correct we have sold a lot of the 18 inch resonators on Duramaxes as well as those "other" brands for folks that like it real quiet and it works very well.
Mark @ DPPI
sprintmod1 12-30-2004, 09:58 AM MBRP or Mark,
Does someone have a picture of the resonator installed? Just curious as to where/how it fits into the system. I like the sound outside the truck but would really like to quiet it down somewhat inside the truck if possible.
dieselfumes57 12-30-2004, 11:55 AM sounds just like a loud banks to me... there all to loud. Wish they made one quiet like factory and i would buy one
Mike L. 12-30-2004, 12:44 PM sounds just like a loud banks to me... there all to loud. Wish they made one quiet like factory and i would buy one
The TTS exhaust system is very quiet ( no drone). At 90 mph there is no sound. It is getting very popular here in California. Just about everyone that has heard it buys it.:D
