: Injectors that fix themselves?

I'm very confused right now. About a week ago I noticed all the symptoms of failing injectors in my truck: fuel in oil, strong diesel smell from the exhaust, etc. So I parked the truck and made an appointment with my dealer for Tuesday.

When this happened I was at school and today I had to drive home. I dumped the oil (about 13 quarts ) and put fresh oil in before I left. I just drove home about 120 miles. When I got home, I checked the oil and I did not gain any and the exhaust no longer smells. I checked the balance rates with my predator and they are perfect now!! The only differences between now and when my injectors were bad is new oil and I reprogramed my truck back to stock.

Im not complaining, but I don't understand it. If my injectors were leaking fuel into the crankcase, that would mean they were cracked or not seated correctly, right? Has anybody else had symptoms that have disappeared over time? I guess I will leave my truck stock and hope that the symptoms don't return. I wouldn't think that taking off the Predator tune (65hp) would have anything to do with it, but who knows. Anyone with similar experiences?

To only gain 3 quarts over the change interval, I would say you need to give it more time, then I bet it will show a rise on the dipstick.

Balance rates may not show a problem, that is why they check return rates.

Did you leave the truck idleing for an extended period of time?? That could make the truck act like it has failing injectors. Or you may have gotten a bad Predator tuner.

I gained the 3 quarts on one tank of fuel, not a whole oil change interval. I check my oil very often and did not have any fuel in the oil until about a week ago, when it dumped 3 quarts iover 350 miles of driving. Now, nothing but clean oil. I drove to work and back today and it ran perfectly and still no fuel in oil. I can't explain it, but I'll take it. I'm going to run it without the predator for a week to see if it continues to run well, then put the 65 hp tune back on and see if the symptoms return. I cant see it being the predator that caused the problems because I have had the tune on for about 6 months with no previous problems.

No extended idle periods, just regular warmups and regular driving with light towing duties every now and then.

I was just curious because extended idling times at 600-800rpm can wash down the cylinder walls and fill the crank case with fuel. I did it once, passed out in the driver seat from being tired in a rest stop and woke up 6-8 hours later with the truck idling. Ended up being 1.5 qts over full.

Just curious...did you monitor your balance rates while your 65hp tune was in? I have a 2004 LB7 and have used that exact same tune and swore my balance rates slowly got worse. Could be be just my truck.

Also I know for sure that your balance rates depends on the quality of fuel you run. There was also a lot of discussion in fluids section about running 2stroke oil and other oils(used motor oil, gear oil etc) that has been found to actually reverse bad balance rates on some owners trucks. Be warned that there have been owners that have reported worse balance rates with 2stroke oil.

Yeah, I check my balance rates about once a week and until last week they were always between +/- 1. Last week two cylinders were reading around -5.5 at an idle (the rest were still good) when I was getting fuel in my oil. Now they are about back to where they were before I had problems.

it could've been some sticking or crappy fuel. I monitor mine all the time and mostly run the predator at 65hp. Keep us posted though this is interesting. My rates run up and down a lot as well but I've never had the fuel in oil problem.
