Ok, I don't know much about the Duramax trucks. I currently have a 00' F-250 and I'm selling it and want to get a Duramax. What are the main differences/updates that make the new LLY better or worse than the LB7?? I only know one person that owns a Duramax and it's an 03' and hasn't had any problems except a bent tie rod:ro) (150 V/A box, full throttle launch on dry pavement)........What makes the New LLY better than a 6.0 Ford??

The LLY has variable vane turbo.
Injectors are easier to access.
EGR
Cat converter
Faster warm up glow plugs

The LB7 is easier to make more power.

If you want to see what makes a Duramax better then a 6.0L ford go read on www.dieselstop.com at all the problems they are having after the 3rd year.

You say that the LB7 makes more power easier, but can the LLY still make the same amount of power? Say after a while I wanted to beef it up, how much power will the Duramax make while still being reliable?):h

The main reason that I like the trucks are because they are alot nicer inside, ride better, and are alot quieter than the Ford...I've always had Fords up until now but I have a few buddies with new Chevy/GMC trucks and I like them alot better than the new Fords.

You can bet that it will not be long before the power mods for the LLY are available. Just like anything else, such as the LB7, the mods take a little while, but will be available as long as the demand is there.
The LLY was built to meet the upcoming emissions requirements, therefor the cat and egr.
Glad to see a ford convert.
Buy and enjoy.............................

The LLY should be capable of holding together under as much power as the LB7 but I don't think it will ever make as much power on #2 as the LB7. I might be wrong.

1. If you have the EGR block off plate and Fingers Chip on the LLY doesn't that help put you back even with the LB7 ?

2. If not what else makes such a difference between the two?

3. IIRC the VVT Turbo causes more lag on the start, but if ya hold the brake take offs can be even with same reaction time right?

In total stock configuration. LLY has less power, more sluggish, and uses a lot more fuel. What we needed was the 02 LB7 with quality, easy to change, external injectors.
Power mods are great, but normally each mod may decrease longevity and dependability. I want something that has great power, great mpg, is very dependable, and you don't have to screw with - just drive it 75,000 miles in 2 years. Believe me - it isn't built nowdays! And never will so long as the bean counters rule the corporate world. Long gone are the days of Duntov, and others who brought us power, fun, and a hell of a good thing for a few bucks.

Bah. My LLY runs pretty good IMO. When it was brand new (500mi) I drove it to Florida and back to pick up a 2500lb machine. It got 17.x on the way down mostly at speeds over 80mph, and 15.x on the way back with the machine sticking up out of the bed at the same speeds. It routinely gets ~19 mpg hwy measured by hand unladen now, and about 14 mpg city. It weighed 7120 with 1/2 tank the day I picked it up.

It produced 246rwhp on a dynojet with the factory 265 tires when it was new. I have a loose CAC hose I need to have fixed, and I broke a piece of exterior trim, my fault. Brakes at tires are still ok at 28K. Everything works.

Is it as fast as a LB7? It depends on what the LB7 has done to it.

Several more LLY tuners are coming on the market, and those that control the VVT correctly will have an advantage over the LB7 trucks on the launch. Of course the LLY configuration will make injectors a popular mod in the near future, now that you do not need to take apart the heads to change them.

Those who think the LB7 is "vastly superior" to the LLY have no idea how similiar the two engines are. The biggest thing is the new PCM which is the next generation PCM for all GM products. The new VVT Turbo comes in second place. Cats and EGR have been on these trucks since 2002 IIRC for emissions states. It's not new.

When more "hot" tuners become available, we will see if the LLY is truly inferior. But considering the engine is nearly identical and has a better turbo, I wouldn't start counting chickens. By 2007, there will be more LLY's than LB7's.

I wonder if someone could buy the LLY heads and covers and adapt them to the LB7. Use the LB7 injectors and mabey some new injector lines. It would be a marriage made in heaven .

I own both LB7 and the LLY 01 and 04.Both stock, the LB7 is a little quicker in the 1/4 when I lined them up and ran them, half a truck length at the finish. Off the line the LB7 jumped by almost one and 1/2 lengths, but the LLY made up the ground quickly threw 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and the distance remained the same after in 5th. My LLy get much better fuel mileage 18 town 19 on the hwy, LB7 gets 14 and 17. The LB7 also has over 250k on it and the lly at 16k. I also have never had the LB7 in for any repairs since I purchased it in 01.
