: Propane or Not.
rejet029 12-19-2004, 10:07 AM I have been doing a little research on propane and was wondering how it worked. Is it something that is always on, or is it like nitris and you just hit a button? I have the lly. Is there going to be any thing else I will need to purchase to complete the kit...Bigger injectors, Burn new chip, Etc.? And then is there a limit on these motors before we start hurting them?
I am very happy with the performance now but just like Eric said, I will want more.):h I find it hard to believe that adding 200 hp to these motors is ok. Should I be concerned with the aluminum heads?
'A meteorite smashed through my roof'
<!-- S BO --> The chances of being hit by a chunk of space rock are measured in the billions-to-one. Roy Fausset, 59, had the closest of escapes last month when what scientists now say was a meteorite crashed through his New Orleans home.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/66a.gif I walked through my front door and it was like a mortar bomb had fallen on my house. <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="203"> <tbody><tr><td> http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39411000/jpg/_39411220_meteor.jpg Most space rocks burn up in the sky
</td></tr> </tbody></table><!-- E IIMA --> There was dust all over the floor of the entrance way and the two doors leading to a utility room and the powder room had been blown open.
There was ceiling debris everywhere. I thought it must have been a broken pipe, but there was no water.
As I was coming home, I'd noticed something on the roof, but had thought nothing of it. It turned out there was a hole the size of a chair through the tiles.
Whatever it was, it had passed through the attic, then my daughter's bedroom, through the powder room and into the crawl space under the floor.
I thought it must have been some frozen waste that had fallen from a passenger airliner - they are carrying out improvements at our local airport, so planes have been diverted over our house.
<!-- S IBOX --> <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="208"> <tbody><tr> <td width="5">http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gif</td> <td class="sibtbg"> http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/v3/start_quote.gif We really dodged the bullet. If anyone had been at home, they might have been killed. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/v3/end_quote.gif
</td> </tr> </tbody></table><!-- E IBOX -->I called the police. An investigator went down into the crawl space and he found some aluminum fragments. There are no rocks in New Orleans, it's all silt. He said: 'It's a meteorite.'
I took a sample over to the nearby Tulane University, where Stephen Nelson - the head of earth and environmental sciences department - examined it.
He said the rock was definately aluminum. He thought it must have been thrown out of a plane by a vandal or become attached to a plane somehow and then fallen off.
But now, after further analysis, it seems it has a profile consistent with that of a diesel engine head. The police investigator was right.
I've collected up all the pieces. It's not a meteorite from Mars or Venus, which sell for $1,500 a gram. It probably came from a diesel engine, so is only worth $3 - $10 a gram. It might help with the repairs.

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> But I don't care about the money. I'm just very grateful that no one was injured. We really dodged the bullet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif If anyone had been at home, they might have been killed. I think just hearing the noise would have caused me to expire.
One of my neighbours was out in her yard with her children eating popsicles. They heard the impact and thought it was a car accident. If it had fallen 100 feet away, they could all have died.
I've been very disorientated by the whole thing, especially when I consider what a narrow escape we all had and what could have happened.
I keep asking: Why me? Maybe God was telling me something? I certainly went to church on Sunday and I will never mock Him as I did in my foolish youth. http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/99a.gif
Just kidding
powershotone 12-19-2004, 10:45 AM With a variable system, it can be on all the time, but because the amount of propane flowing is controlled and proportionate with the boost pressure, it is very drive able power and you will want to use it all the time. It can also be turned on and off with a switch.
Nothing else about the truck needs to be changed in order to use it.
It depends how you add the 200 hp to the motor as to the reliability issue, but the Duramax holds up just finehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif even with those flimsy aluminum headshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Super Diesel 12-19-2004, 12:46 PM I'll back up what powershotone says. Good for increasing the fuel mileage as well. I use mine all the time for about 50,000 miles now.
LLY DMAX 12-19-2004, 01:34 PM I recently bought the Powershot system. I had them set it up to come on at 2 pounds of boost. I installed it without any adjustment. I got the Edge Attitude and the Trippin Attitude mount, and used the switches that come with the Trippin mount to activate the Powershot.
I mainly got the Edge for monitoring purposes, and only run it on level 1.
The reason is because it is absolutely amazing how much of a difference it makes just on level 1 with the propane.
The power is amazingly smooth and linear. It doesn't feel abusive either. I tried higher levels on the Edge and can feel a bit more power but I can feel allot of defuel between shifts as well. At those levels it feels like it is a bit hard on the stock Allison
I run 4 BBQ tanks with a custom propane hose that connects all 4 tanks in series to the powershot unit. (18 gallons of propane) They are held in place with standard hardware that is used to hold tanks down in a RV.
The tanks and the Poweshot are housed inside a lockable Diamond plate aluminum truck box in the bed. Stealth... No tools are needed to remove and fill the tanks.
Only 2 hoses run to the engine compartment, and 2 wires run to the cab. All can be unhooked quickly and fished back into the box in the event of a trip to the dealer.
I let my Dodge owning Stepfather drive my truck, and now I'm wondering if I will ever get it back. He is now in the market for a new Duramax.
blnagel 12-19-2004, 01:40 PM What are the advantages beside fun to drive? Disadvantages? I to have thought about getting propane. Is it true that it will help your pulling performance too?
Thanks
Ben
I had the 90 Juice and lp .... It was an experience to remember... I thought I was driving a late 60's muscle car.
Also with lp only, it really smoothed out the engine and produced a better acceleration consistancy than any box I ever tried.
I had the PowerShot 2000. First class product and first class company that stand behind it with anything you need.
Here is the manufacturer's site....

The main reason I went with the propane is the extended range, and the cleaner burn. Also because...The more propane you burn, The less Diesel you burn. With Diesel prices the way they are And because on average I can get Propane for about $1.00 less per gallion I went with it.
Disadvantages: If you get too crazy with it chances are you will be looking for another motor... That is why I'll be going easy on the Edge when the propane is flowing. That is also why I won't turn up the propane flow more than it was set by Powershot.
Better safe than sorry.
RyanU 12-19-2004, 08:20 PM how long does 1 tank of propane usually last?
LLY DMAX, how much do you have in your setup with the 4 tanks?
blnagel 12-19-2004, 08:20 PM Are there certain parameters set up on the Powershot unit or what ever unit? I would like the extra performance mainly for pulling and also economy. Is it easy to install?

The system PowerShot is ready to go when delivered and comes with detailed instructions if you decide to adjust. The install is VERY simple.
Here are the instructions (http://www.dieselperformanceproducts.com/gm_install.html)
Super Diesel 12-19-2004, 10:23 PM Your best off not to turn the pane up to much from stock or you can get a rattle (detonation). I always add it to my Extreme program (the powershot set up to flow at stock setting from factory) for extra fuel and through some N2O to it for some wicked results. Read sig. A tank full usually last any where from 275 miles to 800 miles depends on the wind, speed, and weight I'm pulling. I have the under carrage 10 gal tank.
LLY DMAX 12-19-2004, 11:50 PM how long does 1 tank of propane usually last?
LLY DMAX, how much do you have in your setup with the 4 tanks?
I can't tell you how long the tank will last because I havn't had to fill them yet. I'm most likely going to get more range out of them the next go round because I can't seem to keep my foot out of it!! ):h Plus, Everyone that knows I have the system wants a ride.
Just so you know I bought one bottle that has an internal guage in it and the other three don't have a guage. Since they are all turned on at once they should empty at the same rate.
Here are my totals:
Edge/Attitude, Kennedy Diesel $695.
Powershot $625.
4 Tanks $160.
Trippin Attitude mount $125.
Diamondplate box (sits on floor, below bed rails) Home Depot $210.
Custom 4 into 1 propane header. $150.
Tank mounting Hardware $30.
Total $1,995.
marcdeluca 12-20-2004, 08:29 PM The setup on my Dmax is variable, and is on all the time. It runs about 50/50, getting an average of 29 mpg on diesel, 26 on lp. What amazes me is how quiet it is when accelerating. The power is so smooth. You need to be careful, however. If you don't upgrade the trans, you need to drive very conservatively. It isn't hard to make 5th gear slip while accelerating hard. In fact, I go through the gears with light throttle, then give it a bit more once I'm in high gear. It would be nice to know how to get the lp to defuel like the diesel does on the shifts. Oh yeah, my lp tank is 100 gal. That keeps me from having to buy it out on the road for high prices.
