Hello all.

I bought an '05 Dmax about 6 weeks ago. It was a demo with 2080 miles on it. When the mikeage got to 3500, the oil was very dark (almost black) so I decided to change it. I put in Royal Purple 15w40. This oil has the certifications required by the Dmax.

I am begining to think that I should just stay with the ole tried and true Rotella. (I used to own a Ford P/S and that is what I used in it)

After a couple of days the engine has began to tick. I can hear it the most around 1800 rpm's on the way to work this AM. Drives me nuckin futs.

Should I drain this expensive oil and put in Rotella?

Thanks for any advice. I just want to do the right thing. I want my truck to last a long time.

I guess I should have looked at the post earlier about the typewriter. But I just want to know if it is oil brand related

Don't let the tick tick you off. It is absolutely a normal characteristic of the Dmax.

Black oil is also normal in diesel engines. It's from the soot generated by the combustion process and if you don't see any in your oil, then it is probably accumulating in your engine. The detergents in the oil wash it off of the cylinder walls, etc. and hold it in suspension. The oil filter removes some of it (the larger particles).

Romark1 it is normal for the tick to appear after your first oil change, it comes and goes. As far as being black, it happens fairly fast with deisel engines.<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_439270", true); </SCRIPT>

Disabling the EGR may help some with the oil turning black as fast.

Dont know exactly when but my ticking has left the building.. I just turned 20k miles the other day and noticed it was gone. I use amsoil and honestly I think after my 2nd change I noticed it less. now I only get the birdy chirp when I shut it down.

Right after I changed my oil I got the "tick". Its now been about 2,000 miles since my last oil change and the "tick" is gone. Go figure.
